Wheatley to check if former Premier Fahie still getting paid

Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley (left) and Premier Andrew Fahie.

A review is expected to be conducted into whether the now-disgraced former Premier Andrew Fahie is still being paid a salary by the government following his unceremonious removal from office.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley gave that indication late last week when asked by a member of the press, stating that it is something he “would have to check”.

Fahie was nabbed at a US airport after a months-long sting operation conducted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

He is currently before a US court facing charges of drug smuggling and money laundering along with his alleged co-conspirators former Ports Director Oleanvine Maynard and her son Kadeem Maynard.

He was subsequently removed from office through a vote of no confidence taken by legislators in the House of Assembly (HOA) shortly after his arrest and arraignment in a Florida Court on those charges.

While the former Premier currently retains his seat in the HOA and his post as an elected official as representative for the First District for the meantime, his removal as Minister of Finance and leader of the territory was made effective once the HOA vote was cast.

Since the former Premier’s arrest, the long-anticipated Commission of Inquiry (COI) report was released and its recommendations have since become the subject of high-level discussions between local elected officials and United Kingdom (UK) representatives.

The COI report has recommended a temporary partial suspension of the territory’s constitution and the imposition of direct UK rule as one of its four overarching recommendations.

Fahie is expected to face the court again today to determine whether he will be released on a $500,000 bond as ordered by the court or whether this will be revoked as requested by US prosecutors.

Demand an election.. there must be someone in the district that you can all rally behind.. the reason government hasn’t called for an election in the third is because then we would have to have elections all over and they just don’t want to lose..

Not saying he placed Natalio as Premier but God teaches lessons.

Fahie felt he could mock God and thought he was untouchable with his witchcraft.

Still he hasn’t learnt in that he’s expected to plead not guilty. Where is the repentance?????

This is the same man who been calling all these Prayer and Fasting talking about repentance while continuing the guns/drugs/money laundering trade.

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. Galatians 6:7

I find it crazier that you think the Minister of Finance would know that. The Minister of Finance does not pay the salaries of government officials and I doubt if he goes about asking other members if they got paid.

With all the issues that we are facing at that moment why would anyone be thinking about if the former Premier is getting paid. Andrew himself probably wasn’t thinking about it he got paid. It’s not a terrible question in hindsight but that was least of the problems considering that the COI gave a damning conclusion about the BVI, recommended suspending the constitution, then the Premier gets arrested for money laundering and drug dealing. I don’t know any normal person who would stop and say wait is the Premier still getting paid.

But the vulture like UK auditors are circling overhead these days.

Very impressive though. The new Minister of Finance does not know if the old incarcerated Minister of Finance and the Director of the BVI Port Authority are still getting paid. Top notch due diligence and good governance here. What’s next? BVI paying inmate Fahie’s legal fees in Miami? No sane person wants to be speaker of the recycled HOA so who’s the next speaker candidate? Premier’s brother? Inmate Maynard? Barak Obama?

I wouldn’t expect the premier/minister of finance to know if a civil servant is being paid, that isn’t his job. The accountant general & Governor Office should know. We need to be taught Government Civics in the community bc we have no idea how it works. The minister of finance deals with the policies and legislation to facilitate the financial operations. Also it would not be unusual for Fahie to be suspended with pay until proven guilty. There has been no evidence provided to the courts as yet.

No evidence? What about the video recording of the former math teacher pulling out his calculator to calculate 10% of $68m he was going to make as leader of narco nation? What about the video of the “Honorable” narco dude accepting $ to sell us out? Case closed. They have hours of recorded audio and video evidence of the meetings leading up to and with the Head Coach.

Just playing a little Devil’s advocate. Just an unpopular fact especially considering the current topic, It’s not evidence until it is displayed in Court and accepted as such by the Judge. Anything we read and hear is all allegations until the official trial and a guilty verdict is announced. Giving what we heard so far it would be a huge surprise if Fahie dodges this bullet but I highly doubt that he will.

What a joke, if he is not paid his salary he is paid a hefty pension, so he still getting tax payer money. Aren’t they entitled to pension after 8 years in office?

    • No says:

Pensions only paid to ex elected persons in good standing. Inmate Fahie lost his good standing status on 28 April 2022 in the Opa Locka airport near Miami while inspecting a plane full of shopping bags of cash he thought was for him.

he aint the first government employee to get in trouble and still receive a salary…if Im correct I think is half pay until proven guilty or innocent

  22. BVI Future says:

Fahie has been on unofficial leave from the job for over 2 weeks now. A salary should not be an issue. He did not show up for work, so he should have been off the payroll. And before anyone comment, you do not show up to work for 2 weeks and see what happen to you, or why should taxpayers pay a salary to someone who sits in a jail, outside of the country.
