When does it end? Hodge-Smith frustrated by UK’s fault-finding

Junior Minister for Culture & Tourism, Luce Hodge-Smith.

Fourth District Representative Luce Hodge-Smith has voiced strong concerns about the seemingly endless stream of governance recommendations detailed in a recent law enforcement review report.

This report, commissioned by the Governor and conducted by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, includes a substantial 138 recommendations aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement and judicial procedures within the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The recommendations span multiple departments such as police, customs, immigration, and the judicial system.

The report has ignited significant debate among legislators in the House of Assembly, with some expressing discontent over its public release. Hodge-Smith questioned the feasibility and ultimate objective of the ongoing governance reforms being imposed on the BVI, likening the process to a moving goalpost. She remarked, “Every time you think that you are getting over something, something else comes up, [it’s] like the goalpost moves. Okay. You’ve done this, but then you need to do this because we’re not satisfied that this is enough.”

She further questioned, “When does it come to an end? When do we get over the hump to say that, ‘Okay, you can relax–you know, you’re getting somewhere.’ At which point are they going to tell us that… we are now satisfied that you have made the necessary changes for us to be recognised as moving forward, recognised as doing good?”

Hodge-Smith also raised concerns about the international ramifications of the report, noting the lack of adequate local representation in its narrative. She argued, “The fact that the report is going to be published in the UK… there’s no opportunity for recourse in terms of us defending ourselves.”

Echoing the sentiments of other lawmakers, Hodge-Smith criticised the demoralising impact such reports have on local agencies, especially those in security and national management. “Is it that they’re all doing wrong things? That there’s nothing good that could have been highlighted in this report as well?” she questioned.

She urged residents to actively engage with their representatives to fully comprehend the ongoing issues and hold them accountable. “Stay focused, stay woke,” she advised.

We didn’t let you to relax (but we didn’t really elect you, did we). We don’t pay you to relax. Law & Order and national security should be one of your highest priorities.

There are no new objectives here. This was one of the outcomes with which your party agreed to comply following the outcome of the COI. We aren’t stupid. Stop trying to gaslight us into thinking you are a victim. Statements like these make it clear that you are part of the problem.

    RESIGN.

    Vote better BVI

I never met any people who complained so hard about being ask to their job properly as a BVI politician.

A report lays bare all the inadequacies that they were *supposed* to be fixing all these years, and all they can do is complain about being asked to do their damn job.

  7. A complete joke!!! says:

Read the CFATF report to understand why law inforcement in BVI need an upgrade especially when it comes to tackling financial crime. If the 138 recommendations do not address these, then that is worth a complaint. Otherwise, what the heck she believe she getting paid to do. Have a vacation? Did she get the memo of how a full time job works? She got some place else to be or something else to do? You mean to tell me that not only is the very incompetent party visionless but they arse lazy too? She should be saying ‘we got this!’ or highlighting which of the recommendations she arguing against. What a ridiculous set. A complete joke!!!

The only thing she is good at is posing in pictures. But for real what has her and Carl Dawson done since being elected into office? Not a damn thing but collect an easy check out of the taxpayers purse every Month. Most of the taxpayers can hardly hold their heads above water to keep themselves from drowning. Is that fair? As a taxpayer, I am barely scratching by.

  22. Tax paying, hard working citizen says:

“Moving goalpost” MY FOOT! It’s going to take a lot of work to undo the mess the legislators and lawmakers made which led to breeding corruption in these departments! And if you have forgotten the amount of work that needs to be done isn’t decided by the governor. It is decided by the satisfaction of the people! How can you question the ultimate objective of the reforms with a straight face? These reforms are the only voice and power the people have to make a fair honest living in the BVI.
Keep the pressure up Governor Pruce!

  23. What’s to come says:

This whole Island is going to self destruct. Something big is about to go down on this Island that is going to affect everyone of us, and I am not talking about a hurricane that brings wind and heavy flooding. • @What’s to come says:

I feel the same way as well. Something is brewing and like you stated, it is not going to be a hurricane. Something that is going to affect every last one of us living here.Perhaps it would be for the best or perhaps it will be…………… we just have to wait and see when the time comes.

The vast majority of the population are clueless as to what is taking place. When persons tried to warn them about what was coming down they became conspiracy theorists trouble makers and victimized. You say you can swim but not in hot water I can see you dancing in the fire. It’s all about the New World Order Agenda 2030. Andrew Fahie would have pushed back against their plans so would have Paul Wattley Delores Christopher Carvin Malone when he woke up where are they. OECS Caricom UN or any other foreign entity are useless. Virgin Islanders are the only ones to fight this fight you on your own can you handle it. It’s a shame that you fell for the okie doke hook line and sinker with a glass of water. What ah go on is just preliminary action. Who don’t hear will pay the price.

I want them to get re-elected so they could bury you all after they finish k!\\ ayo off.

  28. Hmm says:

This reminds me of when that video came out highlighting some of the violent crimes that had happened in the BVI in recent times and people seem like they were more upset that the video exist than the fact that that level of crime exists in the bvi. Same kinda thing here again we want them to stop finding and highlighting faults cause we don’t really want to or intend to do nothing about it. That’s why the report is public; so that when you drag your foot on it then it can be said that these things were brought to your attention and you did nothing.

  29. well says:

you should be tired of yourself. you are waste of my X
