Who in the Opposition would be Premier?

Members of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition stated that they have not yet decided who among them would become Premier if their push for an early election is successful and they win at the polls.

Despite experiencing a setback, the Opposition plans to initiate a motion of no confidence against Dr Natalio Wheatley’s administration so that the House of Assembly can be dissolved and an election called.

During a press conference held by the Opposition on Tuesday, September 3, there was speculation about who would become Premier if their motion succeeds.

Leader of the Opposition Ronnie Skelton and 6th District Representative Myron Walwyn both asserted that a decision on this matter would be premature, as it would be up to the electorate to decide.

“You’re asking a very pointed and difficult question,” Skelton stated.

Walwyn added, “I think we’re asking a question that preempts the people. We don’t know how many people (existing legislators) would have been returned by the poll. Those are decisions that you make after you see who is elected, you have your discussions and then you come up with a consensus.”

Everybody wants to be on top

Walwyn further criticised Dr Wheatley, accusing him of acting as though the premiership was a given. He specifically referenced Dr. Wheatley’s recent interview on Tola Radio.

“He goes up there and then he spills that everybody wants to be the Premier, as if the job is his. Did somebody will that job to you? Every single person in any job in any profession in any organisation should aspire to be at the top of the organisation,” Walwyn stated. “It is not personal power for anybody,” he added.

The Opposition’s no-confidence motion, which Premier Wheatley sought to block on a procedural technicality, includes 20 clauses detailing reasons why the current government should be disbanded.

Premier Wheatley cited Standing Order 23, which outlines the HOA’s procedure for submitting motions. He explained that the motion had been improperly placed on the order paper because it was not handed to the Clerk of the House, as stipulated by the rules. Instead, the notice was emailed to the Speaker, who shared it with the Clerk. The Premier stressed that this technical error invalidated the motion.

In the end, House Speaker Corine George-Massicote upheld the Premier’s objection. The Opposition must now resubmit their motion properly, presumably delaying their campaign for several weeks.

This is the biggest joke because the question was being posed as if they would run as a team. They will NOT! They will continue the usual nonsense as there are 3 different parties making up the opposition. It is easy to throw dirt on the Government, most of it well deserving. However, what will we get with a disjointed team in the opposition? Let’s not pretend as if we don’t know what’s going on with those individuals in terms of how they feel about each other. They all had a chance to come together for 2 different elections and flat out refused, ensuring VIP wins at the polls.

    Ausar says, Ronnie Skelton!

And if those of you, in the opposition cannot decide the leadership of the group, why would y’all run, in the first place, to topple a group, when y’all’s is in a manner of chaos?

The people need a decisive leader, from among the group!

Take a vote, make a decision, and put the results to the people, so that we can decide the way forward, for the next election!

  7. Party over says:

Sorry but NO members of the HOA are qualified to be Premier including the sl** man.

It’s obvious that the UK will be running the BVI for the next few years while the trials for the criminally indicted politicians slowly move through our justice system.

It is clear, if the best brains are requisites for ultimate leadership, it is clear where those requsites lie within the group.

Clearly R, if all the cards line up right, could be 1 and 2. I leave it there.

  11. Democratic says:

The democratic thing to do is the most common sense one. Allow the voters to vote for their Premier. Why should the “leader” of the so-called party be automatically appointed as Premier. this is a very critical and important role and one must be qualified (proven) to hold it and apply for it via debates and voters’rights to choose. Let elections have voting for Party of the People and premier and the Ministries as well…..just my 2 cents.

well them is who they pray for

so what you want us to do now?

  15. Jesus take the wheel says:

It’s a good question. Ronny can’t even file the motion of no confidence properly. Mather is the only person that seems to have the drive, the people on his mind and isn’t corrupted by the “get nothing done” attitude. The problem is there needs to be a team. Who else would rise to do the peoples business? On another note, the territory is too small for this division. It’s a bunch of nobodies fighting for scraps, a car, cell phone, plane tickets, some free food, salary, all while the people suffer. Everyone is government needs to be together. Ministries should be separated and and responsibilities shared by all elected.

Mr. Mather needs to leave that group and joined with the VIP. He had a good relationship with the premier prior to the election then I see him joined with C…y and is against the vip. He need to be with the right group and one day who knows he might be premier himself.

  21. Facts says:

Leading up to 2019 elections it looked like NDP all but had it in the bag with their lineup. After their internal elections, Ronnie and Mitch split with their supporters and started PVIM. This action enabled Andrew Fahie and VIP to win election because of the NDP supporter split. Mitch was the only winner in 2019 for PVIM. Fast foward to 2023, with the writing on the wall, the facts clear, the numbers there for all to see. PVIM and NDP engaged in talks of scrapping the beef and reuniting as based on the numbers it would be the only way to beat the VIP. 4 years later, they stll could not come together and form a united party. ELections 2023 the same PVIM and NDP plus Fraser were elected as the Government and couldn’t unite on a way forward then Lorna jumped ship. Just a year later they are calling a vote of no confidence and having a press conference. Why should anybody be confident in these guys putting aside their egos and foolish pride and doing what’s best for the BVI? I for sure am not convinced of it and would leave Hon. Wheatley right where he is until 2027 to clean his own mess. At least he seem to have a group willing to follow and support him as the Premier. The Opposition clearly does not.

  22. Be Humble says:

The opposition need a slice of humble pie. Take your seat and wait your turn. Give the PREMIER- Sowande Natalio, rope to hang himself. Everyone deserve a chance but the problem is the premier is wasting his. As if he has more than 4 years to make a point. His time is running out. So the opposition should use this time to get the people on their side.

We need fresh blood up in the HOA. Forget about present party affliation and put people who are willing and capable of doing the work for the betterment of the Territory. All we have been seeing is heads butting, left and right. Mouths running like diarrhea done become an epidemic. No progressive productivity is being displayed. So, if we could have these non productive members in HOA, what is stopping us from putting fresh blood in there to get us moving forward.
