Will businesses ordered closed get gov’t compensation?

Dr Natalio Wheatley (left) and Premier Andrew Fahie.

Deputy Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has said he will speak with the Premier and Minister of Finance, Andrew Fahie about the possibility of compensating businesses that have been ordered closed because of the current COVID-19 outbreak.

The BVI now has more than 500 active cases so Cabinet decided that hairdressers, barbers, gyms, bars, clubs and entertainment establishments be closed for at least 14 days starting Tuesday, July 6.

Asked on live radio last evening whether government would consider compensating those affected businesses, Dr Natalio Wheatley said it was not an issue ministers could commit to on the radio since Premier Fahie was absent from the broadcast.

However, Dr Wheatley said offering compensation “is certainly something that we can bring to his (the Finance Minister) attention because, of course, there are some other persons who have called and have questions like that.”

Besides gyms, clubs, and cosmetic shops, restrictions have also been placed on restaurants and ferries.

In-house dining at restaurants is now limited to a maximum occupancy of 25 persons, inclusive of staff and patrons. Ferries, in the meantime, are required to restrict numbers to a limit of up to 65 persons at a time, subject to adequate social distancing protocols being maintained in accordance with guidance from the Chief Environmental Health Officer.

I turned away more than 40 tourists that wanted dinner last night due to restrictions so will the givernment pay me the $4000 I lost in revenue from 1 night and will they pay me for all the revenue lost in the next 14 days as my place is fully open air no walls and all my staff are fully vaccinated.
This is a Tortola problem not an outer island problem yet we are the ones being robbed.

The spread of this virus is partly due I believe to unvaccinated persons. Conspiracy theories are spreading like wild fire and some people choose to believe the bs instead of Science. Coronavirus has killed more people than wars, so what is it going to take for people to accept the fact that this is a very serious threat and can kill you. All that said, government put a 14 days curfew in effect and people done start shouting about compensation. F**k it man, this is why we are in the situation that we are in. I believe that government is corrupt but the greed of the constituents helped them along. We have become a set of parasites who can’t stand on their own two feet. Calling on government for every thing is weak and pathetic. Let me add this before I sign off, I say what I said and what I believe, so I don’t care what the backlash is.

Government doesn’t need to compensate any bars, night clubs or strip clubs. That’s just my 2 cents.

I can’t agree with that. I don’t frequent bars or night clubs however those business owners could be you or me and they are being affected by closure.

Whether you agree with the principle of a night club we have to consider the investments of those persons.

is the government the cause of this virus that you you people spreading because WE OUTSIDE???

  8. WEW says:

Why it certainly depends on WHO profits from the business. A big name local will definitely get compensated whether he has a business or not. Like the “fisherfolk & farmers” who have never put a hook in the water or a spade in the ground.

When they do compensate some persons will cry corruption.

It’s a shame, but as our representatives we need you all to continue being brave when you know in your heart it’s good work being done to help our people.

There are businesses directly effected by tourism that fully qualified to receive small business stimulus and never received any. After years of paying into the government schemes and not a penny! Pay us first! Don’t you dare pay those strippers and clubs that are linked responsible for this outbreak. You couldn’t make this crap up if you tried. Oh lord help us all….

It isn’t just partly about vaccination, it’s all about vaccination. Look at places with 60%+ vaccination rates: they don’t have covid, anymore.

Check UAE and Seychelles, which have the highest vaccination rates in the world yet UAE, for example is at Level 4 warning. It is the vaccinated people who have been careless and have caused this rapid increase.

Why would they promise funds to businesses when they never delivered them last year. The government doesn’t give a s**t about the people or businesses here. They have no clue what they are doing. Call any government department and they cannot give you any answers about how to handle the situation with people in self isolation. Who is to pay them? Should they get paid if they refused the vaccine that could have stopped this situation in the first place. Boats allowed in since June 23rd yet customs say no, we don’t know how to do it. Kindergarten kids could do a better job of organizing the territory than this bunch of fools.

I feel sorry for the innocent workers at restaurants, etc. They can barely make ends meet in good times, so now they’re suffering more because of the ignorance of the unvaccinated. Let’s open the territory fully and have the chips fall as they may. You reap what you sow.
