Works on Carrot Bay sea defence expected to begin in April

Kye Rymer

The Minister of Works Kye Rymer said the wider public will be given more information on the plans for the sea defence system in Carrot Bay with an aim to begin works in April of this year.

Speaking at a one-on-one session with the media on Friday, Rymer said the works on the sea defence system will be undertaken in five phases at five hundred linear feet per phase. The system will begin in the vicinity of the Coal Pot Restaurant and head southwards.

“The sea defence system is made up of two parts which are a gravity wall and a boulder revetment. The boulder revetment extends an average of 38 feet into the sea and the gravity wall has an average height of six feet six inches and two feet six inches thick. Once all Five phases are completed, the sea defence system will span 2,073 feet in length of the Carrot Bay coastline from the Coal Pot Restaurant to the bridge beyond the Carrot Bay Post Office,” Rymer said.

The minister noted that preparatory works have been put in place to commence the project. This includes acquiring the necessary materials such as lumber, steel and turbidity curtains.

“We are in the process of signing a contract for the procurement of the boulders and rocks to form the revetment. A community meeting is scheduled for 6th March 2022 where we will share with the Carrot Bay community and the wider public the plans for the sea defence with an aim to commence works in April,” Minister Rymer continued.

Given that multiple contractors are being used for these different works, of course they can all be completed simultaneously. Otherwise it’s going to take 20 years to finish everything!
