WSD Director calls for more efforts to identify and revive water sources

Perline Scatliffe-Leonard

Director of the Water & Sewerage Department, Perline Scatliffe-Leonard has said efforts must be made to identify and, in some cases, revive water sources such as wells, catchments and ponds to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Delivering remarks for World Water Day 2022 observed on March 22, Scatliffe-Leonard said: “Potable water service can be grossly impacted during hurricanes, power outages, rising sea levels, and other disasters to which we are exposed, and this is why, we must find ways to identify, and in some cases revive our water sources.”

She added that water is life and measures must be taken to ensure that this resource is always available.

“In addition to other initiatives, the department has taken onboard Sustainable Development Goals 6 (SD-6) which is one of the many goals under the United Nations for developing countries, that speaks strictly to water and sanitation. The department continues in its operations and maintenance efforts toward this goal,” the director stated.

The theme for World Water Day 2022 is “Groundwater: making the invisible visible” as groundwater accounts for 99 per cent of all liquid freshwater on earth and has the potential to provide environmental benefits and opportunities.

World Water Day is observed annually and focuses on the importance of freshwater. It also reinforces efforts to raise awareness to the billions of people living without access to safe water.

She need to run in the 7th to take out that waste ah time minister

  4. Crazy says:

The Meters are not calibrated . They need to bring someone in to calibrate those meters so one can be fairly and accurately charged.

  5. E. Leonard says:

Indeed, water is life and water/water resources is critical for domestic needs and for growth and development. The VI is a water-challenged community with an increasing population. It has no rivers, dams, ponds, streams, etc to uptake water from. Though wells, catchments, springs, etc, would improve water supply, if only marginally, the primary water source is desalination. A water utilities (water, wastewater (sewage), storm water) master plan is needed. A radical approach though it may sound repulsive is exploring toilet to tap programme. Increasingly, some locales are exploring and using the toilet to tap water source.

@E. Leonard, lawd ah mercy! Toilet to tap water! You right it is repulsive. Looks like you want to kill ah we. Lol. However, in using the Google machine, you suggesting is not that far fetched. What is the source(s) for bottle water. Nevertheless, the suggestion is a heavy and advanced lift though. The WSD can’t eben bill properly, fix leaks in timely manner, etc. Climate change is real and we must plan for but must take take care of the routine issues. You suggest a master plan but the BVI is a poor planner, doing things from the seat of their pants. It is poor at planning and poor at reacting. What a royal mess.

  6. HOLY PERLINE says:

you fooled a lot of people , but your true self has been revealed ,there are a lot of people including some car wash thiefing water and some workers know , but we are charged again for the same bills again and again so ( to us water users PLEASE KEEP YOUR BILLS WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO PAY YOUR BILL , WSD needs a real engineer

  7. Leaks says:

Fixing the numerous leaks in the system within 24 hours of notification would save lots of lost fresh water.

    • Stealth says:

@Leaks, the metric for responding to major leaks and other emergencies should be within two hours. Routine work orders within 72 hours. Responding and fixing leaks should be a top priority.

  8. A Little Too Late says:

This is all Frazer’s fault for being so gr**dy & self centered. Ocean conversation & the other water plants could have still been up and running to help balance the water demands not to mention allow down time for maintenance when need be. When you have motives that are not in the best interest of the people you are suppose to represent.

  9. Me says:
