Man destroys wife’s phone amid alleged assault

Trevon Johnny has been brought before the Magistrate’s Court for allegedly choking his wife and smashing her cellular phone.

The 36-year-old accused pleaded guilty to criminal damage, but not guilty to common assault and being armed with an offensive weapon.

Allegations are that, on August 29 last year, the now estranged couple was at their Horsepath residence when the wife received a call from a friend.

When she answered the phone, the accused allegedly grabbed the device and started to read the text messages.

The wife tried to retrieve the phone, and a scuffle ensued. The accused then damaged the gadget, the court heard.

The wife grabbed her keys to leave the home, but her Tablet started to ring. It is said that her husband then smashed that device as well.

He then took the keys from her.

It is being alleged that the accused grabbed his wife in a choke-hold, pointed a knife at her, and threatened her.

The matter was reported to the police and the husband was taken into custody and charged.

The husband, who the court heard no longer resides at the matrimonial home, was granted $20,000 bail and ordered to stay away from the woman.

Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste DaBreo also referred the accused to the Partnership for Peace Programme.

He is scheduled to return to court on May 12.
