2 men arrested in police operation on JVD Police Information Office 09.MAY.08 Police have confirmed that two men have been arrested in an early morning operation on Jost Van Dyke on Thursday May 8th 2008.
In the early hours of Thursday May 8th 2008 Officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force mounted an operation on Jost Van Dyke to execute a search warrant on the premises of Isaiah Frett at Great Harbour. PI into Bat Cave armed robbery continues
The preliminary inquiry (PI) into charges of armed robberies against two young men from Belle Vue continued in the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 7th May before Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens. The accused men, Nicoy Scatliffe, 19, and Kareem Durante, 20, are jointly charged with five counts of robbery and one count of aggravated burglary. READ MORE
Belle Vue men fined in common assault case Adrian Fahie, Bevaughn Herbert and Milton Fahie, all of Belle Vue, were all convicted and fined when they re-appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 5th May. The accused men were jointly charged for common assault, destroying property and damaging property.
The Crown had alleged that the three accused attacked the virtual complainant and smashed the windshield of his pathfinder, during a brawl at Belle Vue (at the Corner- on the block) on 24th November 2007 at about 2:50 pm. READ MORE

BVI to host CTO Human Resources Conference Daniel Singh, HLSCC Communications Director 09.MAY.08 The Caribbean Tourism Organisation is currently collaborating with local stakeholders, including Government agencies, to organise its fourth annual tourism human resources conference, which will be held in the British Virgin Islands this month.
The conference will be held from May 21 to 23 at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Paraquita Bay under the theme Developing Inspirational Leadership for Caribbean Tourism. An organising committee, comprising officials from the College, the Office of the Premier, the BVI Tourist Board, government’s Department of Human Resources and the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association, has been formed to assist CTO in finalising preparations for the event. Long Bush man convicted for hit and run A 24-year-old Long Bush man, Halim Scatliffe, has been convicted for a hit and run accident after he was arrested and charges on April 26, 2008 at 3:50 am for reckless driving, damaging property and failing to stop at the scene of a traffic accident.
Scatliffe pleaded guilty to the charges when he re-appeared in court on Friday, 2nd May 2008. [More]

BVIslander living in St. Thomas found guilty of illegal entry A BVIslander living in St. Thomas, USVI was fined the maximum of $1,000 when he was sentenced on May 2nd for illegal entry into the BVI.

Government Information Service The Small Business Bureau, which functions under the Premier’s Office, is urging current and potential small business operators to register for an upcoming series of special workshops entitled “Writing an Effective Business Plan”.
Head of the Small Business Bureau (SBB) Ms. Yvonne Crabbe announced that the workshops are scheduled for next month. They will target anyone who has an idea for a small business, the owners of growing or changing small businesses, struggling small business owners, and prospective borrowers who hope to start a small business. BVI Youth, Jr. Track and Field Championships May 17 By Dean Greenaway The British Virgin Islands Amateur Athletic Association will celebrate World Athletics Day on the new 400 meters Mondo track at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on May 17, by hosting its first Youth and Jr. Championships on the facility.
Events will range from the 100 to 1500 meters for boys and girls. The meet will be one in a series used to select athletes for the upcoming Leeward Islands Youth and Jr. Championships later in the season. It will also be use to see where some athletes are with their preparations for the July 18-19, Caribbean Union of Teachers Games which the BVI will host. READ MORE
BVICA to apply for ICC membership
Public Relations Officer of the BVI Cricket Association Daniel Singh will represent the territory at a meeting of the International Cricket Council of the Americas being held this weekend in the Cayman Islands.
The meeting, which is a development forum of the ICC Americas, will be held from May 10 to 11 at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort. While the BVICA is attending the meeting as an observer, Singh’s main task will be to present the association’s formal application for the British Virgin Islands to gain affiliate member status with the ICC. Lead up to Olympic Day Run begins on May 24
By Dean Greenaway Want a chance to run on the new 400 meter Mondo Track? Two opportunities await you as two 3-mile road races will be held leading up to the annual Olympic Day Run on Saturday, June 21. The Olympic Day Run will be held simultaneously on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
The first race is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, with the other on Saturday, June 7. The May 24 and June 21 races will start and end on the Mondo track at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. These two races will begin at the 100 meters starting line as participants will run 250 meters then exit the facility through the south gate, then head towards the Bobby’s Roundabout. READ MORE
Governor attends at Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society public meeting
On the evening of May 6th, the Jost van Dykes Preservation Society hosted an open public meeting with island residents to announce and discuss the launch of the Society's upcoming environmental research and education programme, which is being funded through the UK's Overseas Territory Environmental Programme (OTEP).
Approxiately 25 of the island's 200 inhabitants were in attendance on Tuesday evening at Rudy's Mariner Inn on Great Harbour. The Guest of Honour, His Excellency Governor David Peary, attended to represent the Foreign and Commonwealth Office which funds OTEP initiatives. READ MORE

First and second for BVI Toastmasters Adenike Sicard-Roberts (BVI) took the prize for the impromptu speaking competition: “Table Topics” at the inaugural Area 6 Contest between all the Virgin Islands Clubs. Clement Warner (St Thomas) was runner up. The Speech Competition was held on Saturday, 3 May at Windward Passage, Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas.
Celeste Fahie (St Croix) won the main event, the Speech Competition and Bobbi Fawcett (BVI) was second. Well known in these parts Celeste Fahie will represent Area 6 at the Caribbean Conference in St Maarten in May 16 – 18th. Area Governor Dennis Dussault (St Thomas) did an admirable job as Contest Chair especially with his fine interviewing techniques. Mrs. Yvonne Thomas (BVI) was a commendable Chief Judge in charge of judges, timers, counters and competitors - all toastmasters from St Croix, St Thomas and the BVI.

Digicel wins competitive bid for mobile license in Panama
Digicel Digicel Central America Holdings Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Digicel (Panama) S.A., is pleased to announce that it has won a competitive bid process for a license to operate a GSM mobile network in Panama.
The highly competitive auction took place on Wednesday, May 7th, with Digicel bidding US$86 million. Digicel’s win for a mobile license in Panama is the latest milestone for the company’s expansion efforts in Central America. Mothers Day women’s cycle race raising breast cancer awareness
By DEAN GREENAWAY, BVI News Senior Sports Correspondent Organizers are expecting a record number of women to participate in Sunday’s Nature’s Little Secrets Cycling Club second annual Mother’s Day women’s race for a cause, which begins at 3 p.m. on Administration Drive.
The club is using the event to raise funds for breast cancer and have partnered with Eureka Medical Clinic to help defray the cost of mammograms, particularly for women who cannot afford them or don’t have medical insurance, club officials said. READ MORE
Brothers sentenced for wounding
BVI News Online Two brothers were yesterday sentenced to three years in prison on a charge of wounding with intent. Franklyn and Travis Smith were charged with wounding William Jerry Smith. LIAT adds new surcharge
MOM, BVI News Correspondent After research it was discovered that airline LIAT added a fuel surcharge several weeks ago. In a statement before the effective 11 April implementation date the company explained that the charge became necessary given the increase in fuel prices: “With World fuel prices rising substantially over the last eight months, LIAT’s operating costs continue to rise. As a result LIAT will increase its Fuel Surcharge on all tickets.” READ MORE
VIIA and Afrikan Studies Klub to hold lecture The Virgin Islands Improvement Association and the Afrikan Studies Klub present the lecture "the Voice of Kham: An Exploration of the Book of Coming Forth to Day from Night which was willfully misnamed the Egyption Book of the Dead." This lecture will be presented by Baaba Heru, the chief priest of the Shrine of Ptah in New York on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Mellow Moods Cafe.
The lecture will be followed by an open mic where various artists will perform poetry, rapping, chanting, and singing. Also, you can listen to Baaba Heru on the radio talk show Umoja on ZBVI on Thursday, May 8th at 8pm.
Parade for the Planet The Conservation and Fisheries Department is inviting local organisations including bands, sport teams, cheerleaders, jump rope teams, schools, environmental groups, all government and non-government agencies to participate in the Parade for the Planet on World Environment Day on Thursday, June 5th. This year’s celebration is observed under the theme “CO2: Kick the Habit! Towards A Low Carbon Economy”. The parade route will proceed from the western exit of the Festival Grounds, onto the James Walter Francis Dive, left on DeCastro Street and end at the Palm Grove Park.
There is no charge for participating in the parade. Interested persons can obtain registration forms and guidelines from the Conservation and Fisheries Department in the Quastisky Building on the James Walter Francis Drive, The Help Desk or the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour in the Central Administration Building. All registration forms must be submitted by Friday, May 23, before 4:30 pm to the Conservation and Fisheries Department.

Robbery case against Jamaicans underway BVI News Online Three persons have so given evidence in the case of robbery against two Jamaicans now taking place in the March Criminal Assizes. Andrew Milton better known as Rattie and George O’Connor are accused of robbing Bobby’s Supermarket at gunpoint on September 16th, 2006. Paul On The Ball Hewlett Randy 'Chino' George made the journey to Birmingham on Sunday to compete in Great Britain’s British Basketball League slam dunk competition at the national basketball arena and missed the coveted title by one dunk.

St. Thomas man fined for drug possession
Bryan Jeremy King, 23, of Tutu, St. Thomas, USVI was arrested and charged on Sunday, 4th May 2008 at West End Ferry Dock for possession of cannabis and importation of cannabis.
The accused appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday 5th May 2008 before Magistrate Mrs. Charmin Rosan Bunbury charged with possession of 25 grams of cannabis and importation of 25 grams of cannabis into the BVI. READ MORE
