Police apprehend 17 illegal immigrants

An early morning tip-off led to the discovery of 17 suspected illegal immigrants hiding among the bushes in Cox Heath on Friday, April 19 the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) said.

The group, comprising adults and children of various nationalities, was spotted disembarking a boat along the seaside, prompting immediate police action. Officers also located two additional individuals during subsequent searches after they arrived at the scene following the anonymous call made just after 6 am.

The RVIPF is now seeking the public’s help in identifying and apprehending these individuals. They have urged anyone who notices unfamiliar persons to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit or the Immigration Department directly.

The apprehended immigrants were handed over to the Immigration Department, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing. The RVIPF and other local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

The BVI has seen several instances of illegal immigration attempts in recent years. These events strain local resources and underscore the ongoing challenges faced by small island communities in managing border security.

Earlier this year, a joint operation between the RVIPF and US Customs and Border Control led to the interception of a vessel suspected of carrying illegal immigrants.

The incident unfolded just before midnight on February 14, and according to the RVIPF, the vessel ran ashore on Cooper Island, where 25 adults and children were later found.

Subsequent searches in the daylight around the island unveiled an additional 10 persons, bringing the total to 35 apprehended individuals, who were then handed over to the Immigration Department.

Immigration detainees have been housed in government-rented hotels and guest houses, which even when supplied with security officers, has resulted in a multitude of escapes over the past few years.
