New asphalt plant having “teething pains”

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer has said operators have been experiencing “some teething pains” with the new asphalt plant that arrived last year to improve the road conditions in the territory.

The plant is being operated by the Public Works Department but Minister Rymer said representatives from the purchasing company are set to arrive in the territory soon to resolve technical issues local operators are experiencing.

“We’ve been going through some teething pains with the plant — various mechanical stuff, but the plant is up and running and we’re doing continuous testing,” Minister Rymer said.

“In terms of road repair, we haven’t had consistency in terms of producing asphalt but once it gets up and running, we will make sure it produces asphalt in abundance.”

Although the plant is experiencing problems, the Minister said the Public Works team is still preparing roadways for patching.

“Public Works is starting to prepare some of the roads to do the repairs in the right way. We’ve heard the complaint about persons just dropping asphalt on the road and hoping cars will flatten it but we’re trying to do it in the right way and you’ll see a difference in the asphalt patching,” Rymer explained.

The new asphalt plant is expected to save taxpayers money, as the government said private companies usually charge a considerable amount of cash for asphalt services.

Young men and women who work under the government’s RATED (Registration, Apprenticeship, Training, Employment, and Development) programme are also expected to be employed when the plant is in use.

The asphalt plant and incinerator are the same shit. Old third-world grade metal sold to us by snake oil men and will forever need replacement parts that will require upfront payment to be fabricated. We ain tired getting catch? He says private entities charge too much, well tell us what’s the cost of government buying equipment they know nothing about and giving them to novices at PWD to mash them up. How the f**k can that be cheaper than simply getting proper private companies to do the jobs properly? PWD have been doing ONE LANE, ONE LANE OF ROAD with a sidewalk down by QE Park now for going on a year and look at it. These guys are delusional as h**l.

  12. Citizen says:

A private company should be running the plant. If not own it. This thing where government want to get involved in everything impedes speedy works and stagnates the economy. I’m surprised the government doesn’t want their own concrete plant saying they going to save money.

  13. NO ASPHALT says:

When is the BVI going to REALIZE that asphalt DOES NOT WORK in the climate and more importantly without actual skills to put it on the roads !!!

    A WASTE OF MONEY!

  14. @ no asphalt says:

I agree , money is the answer as to why if you used concrete they would last too long where would the next contract come from , Ilya ashphalt badly and you get another little earner when next it rains.

  15. Reality says:

The biggest lie you could tell yourself is “I can buy it/do it myself and save money!” depending on what the situation is. In this case the Government and officials are very delusional! Did they do a proper analysis to ensure value for money on this? Depreciation of value annually? Expertise on island? Availability of specialty technicians and parts? Who was involved in the procurement process? Who decided/determined which machine was more suitable for what’s needed for BVI’s roads?

  16. @ ASPHALT says:

it’s not the asphalt , it’s who is applying it / ASPHALT IS ON EVERY STREET IN THE CARRIBEAN / it’s obvious that you don’t know what you are talking about , the set can ( RUMBOS ) ar PWD is doing a better job hanging out in the GHETTO talking pure s**t everyday , who is over them is just as bad as them , WSD & PWD , GORNE TO THE DOGS , if you think i am lieing , ( tek ah Wark tru 4 yo self ) they don’t have any respect for themselves or the job , and as they ard told that we are ENTITLED / and as some does say * f*k D WUK * and , gimme another cold one
