Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick Pickering said a children and family court is needed in the British Virgin Islands, adding that he anticipates social and family problems to only worsen as the territory becomes more prosperous.

“We are getting to the point – if we are not there already – where we will need a family and juvenile court to be able to deal with the problems because our problems are not going to get any less, they are going to continue to multiply as prosperity is upon us.”

Dr Pickering indicated that he shares the view that prosperity and misery are linked.

“A friend of mine told me that prosperity and misery go hand in hand. And I like to quote Bishop John Cline who said that the BVI in the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s had to run out and navigate poverty. But, in today’s BVI, we have to learn how to navigate prosperity.”

“The multi-cultural society that we now live in is one in which we are seeing a multiplicity of problems that confront us, and we are having to take the relevant steps that are necessary to ensure that we keep step with the time,” added Dr Pickering who is also the minister of natural resources and labour.

He further further stated that he had foreseen some of the problems being encountered today.

He explained that he had raised concern about child abuse and other offences such as incest even in his first speech as an elected official in the House of Assembly in March 1999.

“I was confronted with them in my professional work, and so these issues have been on the rise for some time. And I think we are playing catch-up right now to ensure that we put measures in place to deal with some of the problems,” Dr Pickering further said while making his contribution to the just-concluded debate on the Child Maintenance and Access Bill in the House of Assembly yesterday, March 16.

He delivered a lot of the problems

  2. Enforcement is Key says:

Ask the Judges of today and yesteryear if a family court is needed and they will all tell you a resounding YES, it’s imperative. Good call Hon. Pickering.

  3. Political Observer (PO) says:

Justice delayed is justice denied. The accused need speedy trials. They are not getting it now; cases are taking too long to be adjudicated.

Not too sure more courts are needed. Rather what is needed is swifter adjudication of cases.

To reduce the current backlog to within a manageable level, some surge actions are needed, i.e., recruit some temporary magistrates.

Moreover, fire prevention is always better than the best fought fire any day. The VI needs to investigate the root cause(s) of criminal and other activities and then develop and execute a strategic plan to adddress the crime reduction objective.

Further, the Deputy Premier seem to have a low level of confidence that the VI can arrest and stabilize criminal activity. Realistically, criminal activity will never be totally eliminated.

My friend and fellow blogger E. Leonard wrote earlier in the week that growth and development come with the good, bad and ugly. Indeed, prosperity and misery are linked.

  4. Just saying says:

Yes because than all the problems will go away. This is real bootlicker sense

  5. Royal Priestess says:

Nonsense. Prosperity by its very nature is blessings
    Blessings do not bring misery.

Failure to appreciate and give thanks for prosperity leads to poverty. Misery is caused by lawlessness and immorality.

Before parroting others ask God to give you wisdom and understanding.

  6. Yo says:

Yes NDP and their cronies are getting more prosperous. No one else.

  7. Satan says:

I was born in the 60s and I have been preaching about the LOST /BREAKDOWN of morals in our society .

Dr Pickering can open as many Courts as they may want ( more NDP spin ) but the problems will not go away ; THIS is the price we ( BVI ) pay for progress . LACK OF MORAL VALUE

Some identified concerns ; more single mothers working with NO one to look ater / care for children afer school. ; therefore kids go astray .( lost of extended family ; autny. Granny )

Too many homes WITHOUT father figures ; kids rule some mothers because they may be taller than their mom .

Children are NOT made to attend ” sunday school” because a LOT of parents themselves have TURNED their back on church ( forgot God ) but we ALL

Jenny Wheatley used to tell us about ” brought up sie”

TOO many kids are DRAGGED UP because many parents want to. be their children”s FRIEND rather than being parents .

But prophecy MUST be fulfilled ; children will have children ; therefore a lack of guidance , and H L Stoutt said ” where there is no vision ” —————–

I beg to differ with Dr Pico “s statement, that Prosperity and misery go together .

I am no one of higher learning ; these are just my observations living in the BVI for the past 50 + years and you ( the public ) can disagree with me ; but lets get REAL

THE BVI NEEDS A SERIOUS CLEANSING as we are all hell bent on a part of major destruction

  8. Opel says:

A special court is needed for family which includes juveniles. Alternative sentences is also needed. This government is reaching too far in the family.

Fathers and mothers must support their children morally, financially, socially. The government do not have to formulate laws on how it is done..

What they Need to do is put laws in place to protect children from abuse. They too must show moral standards so children can follow.

Do not say do what I say and not what I do. That is not the way to protect. Do not try to fool parents. Children learn by example.

Remember the youngsters are watching you politicians. They watch your behavior in the House of Assembly; the way you handle contracts and the things you do.

Just sit for a moment and evaluate yourselves. Think on changes you need to make. Think on who should be allowed to reside in this country.

We need accountability and freedom of imformation and we will be helping the. men, women and children in this territory.

  9. what a mess says:

what prosperity he talking about where is it.I will like to see where it is. Oh yes only him and his crew

  10. Wendy says:

SIMPLE. More courts can’t solve the ills of our territory, next you will be asking for more prisions. You elected leaders sound so dam stupid.

  11. to hell with bvi gov says:

If you all stay out of family matters and governed the country and stop trying to brain wash kids to be so dam disrespectful then the problems wouldnt be there.

Stop going in to the schools and giving the children them the green light to go home and push their parents buttons.

Let children be children and parent be their guildance for no children can work to take care of themself so therefore they only right is to go the school get an education and respect they parents and stop giving back chat and threats cause them have a#holes like you supporting them sht.

Further more if u make them you raise them and if you all think you all knows whats best for them then house them to simple.

  12. lilian donova says:

the fact is when you complain to police or court they support the man not the mother who is taking all the responsabilities while the men are limin with venezuelan and colombian women spending money and not the children. ???? so you all do something about this becaused the children are the ones suffering and women has to take the children out of the country because no law.
