Stop criticizing the premier – clergyman

Bishop Ishmael Charles

Residents of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are being told to stop badmouthing Premier Dr D Orlando Smith and other persons involved in the recovery process, which comes after Hurricane Irma pounded the territory on September 6.

Bishop Ishmael Charles, who made the call this month, urged persons to instead become more focused on rebuilding the territory.

“We must move away from criticizing the premier. We must stop criticizing people right now and start putting our hands together and work together. Get off the blogs and talking foolishness,” he said while he addressed a ceremony marking one month since Hurricane Irma caused wide-scale destruction and resulted in four reported deaths locally.

The clergyman also joined other persons who have suggested that the category 5 hurricane was a message for residents of the BVI to abandon prideful tendencies.

“Let’s not look down upon anybody,” Bishop Charles advised. “Nobody is bigger than anybody. I think on the following morning after the hurricane, everybody in the BVI was on the same level, and we know that God is saying something to us.”

This man gone crazy? It is sin when a pastor tries to kiss up to a government rather than just saying to them exactly what the Lord says and he aint saying this nonsense he’s here saying.

I think clergy men have far too much to say – “God caused the hurricane ” and all that, they should stick to proclaiming the Gospel and living it out, Jesus didn’t interfere with the Government of the day or stick up for them…

As far as what I’ve seen on the BVI News sites it’s sheer frustration at the lack of accountability of the Government that the Premier resides over – now that ain’t good, what’s to hide?

constructive criticism is good – it’s not considered bad mouthing unless the truth hurts….

So this man is saying that we must take death and don’t say a word? We must see wrong doing and blatant corruption and we must not say a word?

We must be abused and see abuse of power and public funds and we must not say a word? This man needs a fresh anointing because he has loss his old one.

As a Christian we should pray for our leaders. Praying doesn’t mean we support the decisions they make or will make, but pray they make the right decisions to better lead our country.

Pastor as a leader yourself, we pray for you. And right now, you should be telling people to pray and stop worrying about the critics.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 4 Thumb down 6

Bishop Charles is correct. Pray for those in authority; not critize them.

Bishop Charles may have been well-intentioned with his request to stop criticizing the Premier but his request is misplaced.

The Premier is a public servant (servant leader) and must be receptive to feedback (positive or negative) from the people.

Desiring only positive feedback is being infected with the Trumpism disease. If Doc cannot stand a lickle heat, he needs to vacate the kitchen.

Furthermore, residents have a right to reasonable free speech, providing they are not libeling, slandering or being reckless or malicious with it.

Justice Holmes, former US Supreme Court justice, says “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic.”

Well pastor I bet you regret speaking up for the Premier now, but at least you must be praying that your sermons would get such a lively reaction! I’d stick to that Reverend politics is a dirty business and you have no place pontificating like you do other wise you’ll end up like Cline….

Hopefully everyone speaks loudly when election time comes and don’t vote these same ministers back into office. Every last one needs to be VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. The BVI desperately needs new fresh leadership for the islands to progress and rebuild.
