Supermarket donates another $5K to pre-school

Just over a month after hurricanes Irma and Maria hammered the territory, including sections of Simmonds Pre-School, well-known food store, OneMart, has donated $5,000 to the educational facility.

The supermarket gave the donation in keeping with a promise it made to the 51-year-old school last year. It pledged back then to donate $5,000 to the Lower Estate-based school every year for five years.

Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Judith Vanterpool, said her store has hopes of donating even more to the pre-school which she said OneMart has adopted.

“We would like to give some more furniture. We would like to buy some more educational material. Technology is the in thing now so we don’t see any reason for us not having some technology here for the beginners.”

“Today (yesterday) marks the second phase [of our donation]. We did one $5,000 last year and this year we are back,” said Vanterpool.

She added that giving back to the community is the supermarket’s corporate responsibility.

She however said: “For me it’s more than that. It’s my love for education and my love for children. I could not live without it.”

Meanwhile, the donation came at the right time for the school, which has been reduced to using tarpaulins to cover the roof of its building.

The school, nevertheless, managed to reopen following the the Catergory 5 hurricanes.
