Culture Minister, Myron Walwyn said despite a significant scale down in activities to observe Culture and Heritage Week 2017, canceling the event this year would not be a wise move.

In fact, the Minister said the theme selected for this year has been most fitting, considering the challenges the territory is now faced with due to recent hurricanes.

Activities for Culture and Heritage Week began yesterday under the theme, “Reflection of Our Virgin Islands Culture: Then and Now.”

“You may ask, why not cancel the week of events due to the devastation which occurred as a result of the floods and hurricanes. My simple answer would be that culture is significant in our daily lives; no matter the situation.”

“It is interesting to note that this theme was selected before the flood on the 7th of August and hurricanes Irma and Maria which followed. Ironically, it has turned out to be a most fitting theme for this year given what we have experienced,” said Walwyn.

According to Walwyn, staging the event will give older persons the chance to explain the BVI’s traditions and way of life of long ago.

It will also give the younger generation the opportunity to see and live first-hand the experiences of their fore parents, said Walwyn.

Week of Activities

The week of activities will include cultural presentations and exhibitions at the various schools throughout the territory to be conducted on specific days.

A Virgin Islands storytelling series with Mr. Elmore Stoutt will be aired on radio Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The annual Territorial Dress-up Day will conclude the week’s activities on Friday.
