$100,000 allocated to retrain tourism workers

As the territory prepares to reopen on December 1, the government will be allocating some $100,000 to retrain and certify workers in the hospitality industry to ensure they know safety procedures that will prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Fahie, who made the announcement in an interview with ZBVI, said the training will be done by the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

“They (the training) will be done on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on Tortola, and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. We’ll also be doing it online,” the Premier explained.

He added that certification will be done for service professionals in many areas including restaurants, kitchens, front desks, the craft industry, yachting sector, and taxi services.

“Working in COVID-19, it’s a totally different era than working before. The cheque will be turned over this Friday and the classes are already scheduled to start on Tuesday the 20th of October,” Premier Fahie said.

Currently, there is only one active COVID-19 case in the BVI.

Earlier this week, Premier Fahie announced that visitors will only be required to quarantine for a ‘short period’ once the territory reopens on December 1.

However, he said visitors will have to undergo at least two COVID-19 tests.

No tourists are coming anyway, so this is a waste of time and money. Tourists will go where they are welcomed, certainly not the BVI.

Put your money where your mouth is or shut up. Tourist came even when we were a pile of rubble after Irma why wouldn’t they come now? Now is the best time to come especially to a low risk territory and get away from the big city life and enjoy sun and sand in the BVI.

You are delusional. No Tourists are going to come with the regulation imposed. There are plenty of places on this planet as beautiful as the BVI and welcoming, including in our islands.

We’ve just cancelled actually, as have friends. Spending any amount of time in quarantine from a 7 day trip is just not reasonable. Rebooked a week in antigua instead.

  2. Short period quarantine says:

will kill off the entire tourism sector. Thank you

  4. Waste says:

Don’t waste the money. Nobody coming. BVI is a dead zone. Only Belongers to stay. This is why Foy didn’t let the expat workers in. He never planned to open to tourism. He’s a piece of s***.

What our leaders doing is making alot of noise. Jingles, promotions and fancy ads without the solid info, only paint a garden full of thorns. Bring a full drum of petrol and an empty drum of petrol and see which one makes the most noise. Andrew is full of empty noise. My calculations from all the departure flights so far, is that many tourism employees have left this place. Who we going train and where they going work?

While he and clawed pushing independence, people hungry. The rat will always be afraid of the cat

No amount of FB live, press releases, or speeches can help them now.
