$105K earmarked for bush cutting | 32 contracts to be issued shortly, says Premier

Retirees in the British Virgin Islands will soon find additional employment as Premier Andrew Fahie has announced plans to continue with the government’s bush-cutting programme.

Responding to questions in the House of Assembly recently, the Premier said funds have already been earmarked for the undertaking.

“The record will show that $105,000 was allocated in the 2019 budget for the programme commonly referred to as ‘bush-cutting’ for retirees,” Premier Fahie said.

He continued: “To date, the responsible ministry — the Ministry of Transportation, Works & Utilities — has reported that there has been no expenditure against that. However, I am being informed that 32 contracts should be issued shortly in all the districts.”

Premier Fahie said three contracts will be issued in the First Electoral District, nine contracts in the Second District, four in the Third Electoral District, one in the Fourth District and seven contracts in the Fifth District.

He further said three contracts will be issued in the Sixth Electoral District, two in the Seventh, one in the Eighth and another two contracts in the Ninth District.

  4. 32 contracts says:

That’s over $3k per person, or about 30 days, ie 2 or 3 times a month, sounds right for a year

  5. Anonymous says:

This is much needed. You can’t take a walk or jog on the sidewalks in the 3rd district without being lashed by every leaf and branch for miles.

  6. For true says:

Thanks but, I am enjoying my retirement traveling with the wife and spending time with the grand kids.

Very good for you, glad you are enjoying retirement. Some retirees are not so fortunate. Some old folks are not receiving any (zero) benefits. A case of being short one quarter and not allowed to pay up by the SS Board. The laws but still inhumane treatment of old folks.

Meanwhile we have a prison full of young men who can do this for a fraction of the cost. A full RVIPF officers to supervise them while on work duty since we don’t see them patrolling the streets anyway. We are now paying retirees a pension and giving them bush cutting contract? Students need community service hours perfect job to clean and clear their community roads. Or that is too much work for students to be doing. Even your grand gesture of 1000 jobs

You can’t force them to do it and even if they refuse they can’t extend the jail time fo refusing to do so.

  9. vg rESIDENT says:
