14 advance to semi-finals of Nat’l Spelling Bee

Fourteen students from various primary schools in the territory have advanced to the semi-final round of the 2018 Spelling Bee Competition slated for Monday, June 11 while 10 were eliminated.
A total of 12 primary schools represented by 24 students took part in the elimination round of the Ministry of Education’s yearly competition held yesterday, June 4.
The final round will be held on Monday, June 18.
All three rounds of the contest are being held at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School in Road Town.
Semi-finalists
Each school was represented by two students who had to compete individually.
Schools such as St Georges and Althea Scatliffe primary saw both students garnering enough points to move on to the semi-final round of the competition.
The full list of student semi-finalists comprises Naomi Onwufuju and Shelby Harpe of the St George’s Primary, Rhiann Ramlall of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Revaugh Percival and Ashaanna Tillack of Althea Scatliffe Primary, Kiara Callwood of Leonora Delville, Anjanique Cheltenham of Joyce Samuel Primary, and Zarina Callwood who represented Francis Lettsome Primary.
The other semi-finalists were Zyra Creque of Robinson O’Neal Memorial, Eillianna Forbes of the Ebenezer Thomas, Kayla Briggs of the BVI Seventh-day Adventist Primary, Davida Chinnery of the Jost Van Dyke Primary, Gorcia Johnson of Claudia Creque, and Ronella Richmond of the Francis Lettsome Primary.
Eliminated
On the other hand, a number of students did not score adequately to secure them a spot in the semi-final.
Both students from the Ciboney Centre for Excellence on Virgin Gorda and the Willard Wheatley primary on Tortola scored too low; eliminating them from the race to the final round.
Other schools now eliminated from the competition are Willard Wheatley Primary and Cedar International.
The Education Ministry, the Rotary Club of Road Town, and Aleman Cordero Galindo & Lee Trust BVI Limited sponsored the competition.
