16-year-old boy charged for sexual relations with a minor

A 16-year-old male has been arrested and formally charged in connection with an alleged case of unlawful sexual intercourse involving a 13-year-old girl, BVI News understands.

According to sources, the teen — a Virgin Islands Belonger with ties to the neighbouring US Virgin Islands — was arrested last week and taken to the Road Town Police Station. The arrest reportedly occurred in the presence of his parents.

Police said the young man was arrested on suspicion of sexual intercourse with a minor, an offence under Virgin Islands law. BVI News further understands that officers attached to the Serious Organised Crime Unit processed the teen before he was granted bail in excess of US $15,000. He is expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court in the coming weeks to answer the charges.

It remains unclear which schools the two minors attend and whether they are receiving intervention or support from social services. It is also unclear who initially reported the matter to police.

The case comes amid renewed concern about sexual offences involving minors in the territory. In recent years, police have urged parents and guardians to closely supervise minors and to report suspected abuse promptly.

Authorities have also reminded the public that sexual activity involving persons below the age of consent is a serious criminal offence, regardless of whether both individuals are minors.

  2. So, you have essentially 2 kids says:

engaging allegedly in sexual relations? Question: Where were their parents?

Also, why was this case being handled by the Organised Crime Unit? Since when is sexual relations as teens became organized crime?

What am I missing here? Somebody make sense of this for me please.

    • @you have essentially 2 kids says:

I agree with you. Officers from Family & Juvenile should have been the ones processing the teen.

There should be some sort of sex education (in the High Schools especially) where these young boys are taught that engaging in sexual conduct with young girls is a crime. This matter needs to be seriously addressed.

They are both minors. Why is it an arrestible offense for him and not for her. According to the article the offense took place in the presence of adults. Are they the parents/ guardians..Both mjnor children appears to be in an environment with questionable parenting/ supervision..which in my opinion, would require immediate removal for their safety.

@cease the game read again, the arrest took place in the presence of the parents not the act of intercourse.

Hey..my oversight . However,if it was not forcible rape, then his arrest and his alone is unfair in my opinion.
At this juncture,if I was his parent I would welcome a trial..her chatact

      • @ read Again says:

        I missed that!!!
        But it has not been
indicated that there was forcibly a rape,
To have a trial will in my opinion, sully the character and the reputation of the girl and for a lifetime.,,,unless there has been previous complaints from other like incidents against him…
The possibility of witnesses attesting to her interactions with them and others in the past….
Hopefully this will be settled outside of Court,in the best interest of both and counseling will be applied successfully.

It may be that we are imputing criminality where only youthful innocence existed.

The real crime is the deterioration of parenthood, by both mother and father, in our society.
