18-y-o burglar sentenced to six months in prison

An 18-year-old Humtums Ghut resident has been sentenced to serve months at Her Majesty’s Prison for burglary and criminal damage.

Though K’Shoy Alexander was sentenced to one year imprisonment for each offence, he will only serve a total of six months in lockup.

That is because Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards suspended a fraction of the sentences and ordered that they run concurrently (at the same time).

The senior magistrate ordered that six months from each of the one-year sentences were to be suspended for three years. That effectively means Alexander will only serve the additional six months in prison if he commits another crime in the next three years.

Alexander was also ordered to pay a compensation of $2,500 to the complainant’s whose glass door he had criminally damaged during the burglary.

What happened

Alexander was charged for illegally entering the Royal Shop in Road Town on May 26.

The court heard that footage from closed-circuit television – more commonly known as CCTV – showed Alexander and another male burglarizing the store.

During a subsequent investigation, police recovered a pair of matching clothes that the accused burglars had worn during the commission of the offence, the court heard.

Alexander was later arrested, charged, and brought before the court, where pleaded guilty.

During his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Magistrate Richards said Alexander’s early guilty plea, the fact that he showed remorse and had no previous offences were all taken into consideration. She also noted the seriousness of the offence.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s 22-year-old co-accused, Juwan Potter did not make an appearance in court on Wednesday.
