Self-taught singing sensation Dwight Hutchinson, Jr from plans to utilize his recent victory at the Gen Y Factor ‘Battle of the Sexes’ competition to propel his gospel music career to higher heights.

Following his victory at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town on Saturday, Hutchinson told BVI News that, among other things, he won a recording contract and a total of $4,000; part of which he will use to achieve his goal.

“For as long as I can remember since I was a wee boy about six and even before then, I’ve been singing. I’ve written some songs, but I have procrastinated a lot. However winning was a confirmation for me [to push my music forward],” he said.

“I am very happy. The extra push I got honestly was from God because, for me, my purpose and perspective of the whole competition was to minister first of all in song and perform after. Winning was just the icing on that cake.”

The 29-year-old St Vincent native said he worked hard throughout the competition, especially to keep his emotions under control.

“I did not expect to win, but all the hard work paid off,” he added.

The St Vincent national moved permanently to the territory in 1998 with his family. Hutchinson is also a musician who can play the saxophone and guitar.

On the night of the competition, he sang ‘Cycles’ by American gospel artiste Jonathan McReynolds. He said he admires the artiste because “his music is very relatable”.

“It speaks to everyday challenges that we face not just as Christians but as human beings. And that was one of the reasons why that particular song was chosen.”

The other finalists in the competition were: Mr Caribbean Yohance Smith, Simone Phillip, Mya Brown, Hunter Christopher and Dwain Frett.
