21 illegal migrants found on VG

Local law enforcement authorities have found 21 illegal migrants in the North Sound area of Virgin Gorda today, Thursday, March 21.

These migrants are of Romanian, Haitian, Colombian, American, Irish, and Ecuadorian nationalities.

A media release from the Immigration Department said the illegal migrants are being processed in preparation for detention and repatriation.

They are undergoing what officials have described as “intake processes” by the department’s Enforcement Unit.

“The Department of Immigration and members of the Joint Task Force continue to increase its capabilities by ensuring that cohesive plans are executed in a manner that will continue to share a sense of safety to our residents. The security of our territory’s borders is paramount,” the Immigration Department noted.

In the meantime, Acting Chief Immigration Officer Nadia Demming-Hodge is asking anyone with information related to these migrants to contact Immigration at 468-4705 and 468-4754 or the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force Hotline at 311.

BVI News will bring more information on this developing story as it becomes available.

  1. " illegal migrants" says:

Why are we referring to these people as ” illegal migrants”. The correct description should be undocumented migrants.

Now, when you have people from these nationalities : Romanian, Haitian, Colombian, Irish, and Ecuadorian, it suggests to me that these people are probably part of some human trafficking scheme whereby they have paid some money to perhaps get them into the US.

People do not travel all the way from Romania, Ireland, nor Ecuador to wind up on Virgin Gorda. I can understand Haitian’s doing this because the situation in Haiti is bad.

As for the American among them, I wonder what their role is in this? Did they overstay their welcome, or are they a part of some smuggling network?

Your comment is accurate, except for the ‘imbeciles in America’. Not in agreement with that part.

Now, there ARE migrants who come to a country LEGALLY and there are others who do so ILLEGALLY, meaning they do not have the valid documents to enter a country. That is NOT rocket science.

Seems as if the US entry via these BVI is a breeze well, because it has-been a breeze through.
As such, security of the Nation is at risk.

Blockade these VI and safeguard the world is the solution.

  4. Explain says:

The Security of our territory’s Borders is paramount the Immigration Department noted.

Tell us: What Mechanisms are in place to ensure that our Borders are properly secured?

If ours Borders are really secured, How is it that hadn’t it been for the help of the US Authorities, We continue to be plaqued with Hundreds of Millions worth of illegal Drugs on a continuous basis?

Are these illegal activities considered Prime Examples of this Territory’s Secured Borders?

  5. Resident says:
