276 derelict or abandoned vessels now online

Photographs of 276 vessels and vehicles that have been either declared as derelict, abandoned, or shipwrecked are now available for viewing online.

“Owners are urged to scroll through this album to see if their vessel needs to be removed,” government has said.

Notices will also be affixed on these vessels where possible and a list will be published in the Virgin Islands Gazette, it further said.

The vessels are perched at various locations such as Paraquita Bay, Road Harbour, Trellis Bay on Tortola and on the shores of other islands.

Some of the vessels appear to be submerged, while others have varying levels of damage.

Background

Owners will have 30 days to claim the property once government declares the vehicle as a ‘derelict’.

That is according to the newly-implemented the Disaster Management (Amendment) Act, which grants the government power to declare a vehicle or vessel as a derelict.

The new law states that if the owners or insurers do not remove and dispose of the vessel within 60 days from the date of issue of the notice, then the Receiver of Wrecks may take possession of the vessel and remove or sell or dispose of the vessel as is considered necessary.

The owners or insurers would still be required to pay for the costs incurred for removing and disposing of the said vessel(s) plus a penalty.

I hope Government takes the next step and names the registered owners. Should these owners not claim their vessels then they should be banned from registering/owning/operating any vessel for a lengthy period of time. A list of these persons should then be circulated to ALL media outlets.

Many photos date back to April. Some of the boats shown gave already been salvaged

  10. Concern says:

It should be easy to track their owners, are they not registered. If not claimed Government should auction what they could first, then destroy the rest.

  11. Vehicles says:

What about derelict vehicles? They are not pictured here.
