3 local firms successful in WE ferry terminal bid

Minister for Transportation Works and Utilities, Kye Rymer.

Three local firms were successful in the second round of the prequalification process of the West End Ferry Terminal construction project.

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer made the announcement in the House of Assembly (HOA) this week while noting that the local firms included one standalone applicant and two firms within a joint-venture application.

He did not disclose the name of the firms.

Rymer said making it past the second round of prequalification underscores the ability of local contractors to succeed in competitive bidding processes.

The Works Minister explained that nine applicants participated in the second round of prequalification which closed on August 31. The four shortlisted applicants, which included the three local firms, were all shortlisted in the prequalification process.

“All four qualifying applicants will be issued the bidding package in order to submit comprehensive bids for the full construction of the West End Ferry Terminal,” the Minister told lawmakers.

The RDA recently introduced what it described as an optimised design solution for the new West End Ferry Terminal which it said factors in climate response and energy efficiency for an innovative experience.

The new design differs markedly from the ‘classic modern’ option which was selected last year by residents after a poll was conducted for a decision on the final look. That option tied in the poll with the previously proposed ‘organic, futuristic’ design and the new look appears to be a blend of the two.

Late last year, the RDA announced that the ‘classic modern’ look was decided as the winning design for the project after putting three options to a vote previously. The RDA said at the time that it took into consideration the efficacy of the three designs and the resiliency of the building and the availability of materials in making its decision.

This is good news. I am glad the day this project was made a priority.

  2. Great says:

But does this government have enough money to pay the successful contractor to build the complete ferry terminal in West End??

A partial ferry terminal just replicates the make shift terminal in West End now.

    • RDA :) says:

The RDA don’t mess around on the bids – the best bid from a contractor with the necessary competency gets the job, and they don’t sign the contract until all of the funding is in place.
Why don’t we have the RDA run the Territory?

The A** Clown Brigade in full effect. This is not a revenue creating activity. The terminal is just a building that represents ongoing maintenance and capital obligations by way of constant upgrading due to it being so close to the sea and nakedly exposed to hurricane and tidal forces. Not a good time to be inking anything of this nature until we get some kind of idea about our financial position

As if it is something to hide.

They had put out a bid for the design and build of the Palm Grove. You never heard anything about the returned bids after their opening. Next thing you are hearing in the HOA is that Government isn’t going forward with whomever they had intended to. Months after the tenders were already opened.

The fact also that this Design and build project isn’t already underway just shows that the Government has no clue about seeking private finance initiative projects.

Hope none of them chosen is the one that was chosen and hired to complete improvement on the lil miniature of an already existing bridge to Frenchnan’s Cay.
Hope their will be consistent oversight and inspections during the construction process.

    gov settle festival bills yet?????

  8. Common sense says:

Only accept bids that come with a third party completion bond guaranteeing the project will be completed on budget, on time, and, per specification. That’s the way the real world operates and from past lessons we should also.

      @ Common Sense

The need to include Performance Bonds, Advance Payment Bonds or “guarantee Bonds” in a bid by a Contractor has to be requested by the Client. It has to be a part of the Tender requirements that the Contractor has to full fill.

If not, there is no need for the Contractor to secure such bond(s) as these are very costly and even financially “restraining” for a Contractor to secure. Imagine having to secure a 10% performance bond and 10% advance payment bond. Each secured individually on a +$20M project.

I have not seen the documents, but I would be surprised if it did not include a Tender Bond based on the perceived “level” of a project this WE Ferry Terminal is shaping up to be.
