3 nabbed, charged in connection to BVI burglaries

Police have arrested three men in connection with the series of burglaries that have been happening in the British Virgin Islands.

Charged are are Road Town resident Michael Ashby, 36-year-old Huntums Ghut resident Reynoldo Hewlett, and 24-year-old Belle Vue resident, Shamoi Dagou.

The accused men were charged last week, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) said.

Police said both Ashby and Hewlett were charged for two separate business break-ins — one at a restaurant in Baughers Bay and the other at a ‘commercial business’ in the Road Town capital.

“Hewlett was also charged with an additional count of burglary after he was found to have entered the same premises twice and escaping lawful custody,” police said in a media release late Wednesday afternoon.

Police further reported that Dagou was just nabbed and charged for a burglary that happened last year.

They did not give details of that reported incident.

“Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department have been actively investigating a number of commercial burglaries in Road Town and Wickham’s Cay II area. Burglars are also targeting a number of construction offices and worksites where valuable tools and cash are stored,” said the RVIPF.

One of the most recent burglaries happened at iSmart in Road Town where assailants stole laptops, cellular phones, and other electronic items. Police said they suspected the perpetrators were reselling the items for cheap.

Law enforcers are now warning business operators and construction site managers to ensure their premises are properly secured and aided with alarms and CCTV cameras.
