The Port Purcell cargo facility was forced to close prematurely on Monday afternoon, September 13, because of the discovery of 39 kilos of a substance believed to be cocaine.

Commissioner of Customs and head of the Joint Task Force, Wade Smith said in a radio interview that the substance was found in a container at the port.

Smith said officers attached to the Customs Department were the ones who discovered the substance. Other members of the Joint Task Force including police and Immigration officers were then alerted to offer assistance.

The Customs boss said the Joint Task Force continues to investigate the matter.

  3. Was there inside help? says:

39 kilos of cocaine found at the port. The question that immediately comes to mind is:

Who is working @ ports possibly facilitating the safe entry of such a large amount of drugs?

I cannot imagine drug smugglers would try to import such a large quantify of drugs thru a legal means unless they had some sort of guarantee that the drugs would be get thru inspection safely. I don’t think they would risk loosing that large amount of drugs to interception and confiscation.

IMO, there is more to this story. The investigators need to look deep. I would not be surprised if there is an inside person(s) @ ports part of larger operation to smuggle drugs into the territory and guarantee safe passage.
