5-year concessions part of Penn’s ideas for small businesses, no more ‘lip service’

Dancia Penn

Independent Territorial At-Large candidate for the February 25 general elections Dancia Penn is pledging to break the political cycle of “lip service” and, instead, offer meaningful assistance to local small businesses, which she says are the engine of any economy.

“Support, I believe, for small businesses should include things such as incubator spaces to give startups things like affordable storefront or base operations, concessions to businesses in their first three to five years, enhanced access to finance and education, as well as training in areas like marketing,” Penn said at the launch of her campaign in East End on Saturday.

She said these support measures can only be achieved through the implementation of real policies and laws.

“It is time that elected officials stop making vain promises to our young persons in particular and to members of the community as a whole,” the former legislator and attorney general said.

In light of the pressure on the territory’s financial services industry, Penn said fresh ideas are again needed to distinguish the BVI from other financial services jurisdictions.

And in addition to her plans for strengthening infrastructures such as roads, the territory’s sewerage network, and telecommunications, Penn is also proposing ‘solutions’ for food security and for sectors such as education, tourism, energy, and the environment.

She also decried the high cost of living and promises to push for the much-talked-about consumer protection legislation for the BVI.

Penn, in the meantime, said she has no interest in making promises for her first 100 days if she is elected into office. She said the next government can only decide what first to do after assessing the true state of the territory’s finances.

I would like to know if you have resigned from the General Legal Council since declaring your candidacy. Before I consider a vote for you, I would like your impartial and sincere position on what you would do, if elected, about BVI law being practiced outside the BVI especially without checks and balances on numbers.

I would highly doubt it. She maintained her own law firm in private practice during the entire time she was Attorney General.

Did she offer herself any government contracts, unlike some? We’re waiting for an answer. You all always try to make issues over people you all know would make a difference in this country for all of us. The gravy train stops on 25 February. We voting for transparent, honest people. Country above self

I am no great fan of Mrs. Penn-Sallah,

but why would she be required to close her law office that just seems like an unfair and silly request. I never heard about her firm engaging in government work, so you’ll need to stop acting so silly.

I respect Mrs. Penn, however she is old and out of touch with reality. A man should know when his medication date comes to expiration and take rest instead.

    Everybody addressing, Tourism;Economics;Water; Education;Innovation; Fisheries;Farming; etc.
What about the Cost of Living? It’s a crisis facing BVI Residents. Also, another issue, Price Mark Ups! Bad enough people are barely making their rent, much less put a decent meal on tbeir table. It’s all good for the Territory to have all these Political Visions, but we all know, if the Council dosen’t approve it, it will not get done!
