$665k contract signed to restore VG Sports Complex

Officials from the Ministry of Sports, the RDA, and a construction firm at a contract signing for restoration works to the Virgin Gorda Sports Complex.

The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) has awarded a local construction company a contract valued well in excess of half-a-million dollars for construction works to the Virgin Gorda Sports Complex.

Rufred Forbes and Associates Limited was the recipient of the contract valued at $665,344.78.

The construction company will be required to conduct demolition works as well as roof and wall panelling installation, painting, electrical works and repairs to the seating area of the facility.

Sports Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley said he was pleased the facility will finally be fixed as it carries great importance to Virgin Gorda residents.

“We’re sorry we couldn’t get the court fixed before Summer Jam which is an even in Virgin Gorda over the summer. But we are glad we’ll have it fixed so that the people of Virgin Gorda can have access to a sporting facility that really brings the community together. It gives the young persons the opportunity to develop their talents and they have a good programme of youth development over there,” the minister said.

Dr Wheatley gave reassurance that he is working to get other sporting facilities operational.

“I want them to know we are working hard to get them fixed. I know they are some other issues that we have to work out including getting some of the courts, which are already fixed, lit by making sure we have lights up on the court. So we’re working on some of those things,” Dr Wheatley added.

The Virgin Gorda Sports Facility has been out of commission since receiving 90 percent damage from the 2017 hurricanes.

Works for this project is set to begin this month and is expected to be completed by November 2019.
