$700K set aside for immigration detention centre — Premier

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley told residents recently that his government has assigned hundreds of thousands of dollars in next year’s budget to build a detention centre for illegal immigrants.

Currently, immigration detainees have been housed in government-rented hotels and guest houses, which even when supplied with security officers, has resulted in a multitude of escapes over the past few years.

According to Premier Wheatley, “$700,000 has been allocated in 2023 towards the development of a detention centre that will house and process illegal immigrants in a humane manner, and in accordance with international conventions until they are safely repatriated to their homeland.”

Premier Wheatley explained that the territory is in need of a dedicated facility to accommodate the processing of illegal immigrants and stated that this initiative is critical to the security and safety of the people, as well as complying with international standards for the treatment of illegal immigrants.

“The temporary accommodation arrangements as they obtain today are not effective and are vulnerable to subversion, as has been experienced in recent times. This will also save government money as renting accommodation to house detainees is very expensive,” the premier noted.

While several detainees have been recaptured and processed over the years, it remains unclear how many escaped persons remain at large at this time.

  2. SMH says:

Just hold them overnight in Police Yard( let armed Police watch them) put them on a plane or boat and send them out! The Prison needs revamping, there is no Public Library, We spending too much monies paying rent to house Assembly Sittings, plus there are so many pressing contracts and works on the Table. Can We atleast take care of those instead of utilizing monies on a Detention Center that has no relevant impact on the Growth of the Economy.

  3. UKM says:

Where is the money for the Palm Grove Shopping Center. The government fail to insure the building and now the people has nothing.

  5. VI says:

Make sure there are no windows and one door in the building, hence no where to escape. We would like to see a design of the building before it is constructed

  6. Deh Watcha says:

@UKM it was put out as a design and build a few years after hurricane irma. No report on who bid or what the bid prices came back at.

Since the bids were received and opened nothing else has been heard about this project. Maybe the bids didn’t come back to suit the direction they wanted to go.

  7. Observer says:

It doesn’t need no detention center we need a public library, better roads, and a proper place to sit on the A.O Shirley grounds with covering from the rain.

  8. Ship them back to where they came from!? says:

What fool comes up with these ideas?
$700 thousand dollars! This is not his money! Buy a stupid plane ticket! Job done.
We need a trauma unit in Virgin Gorda. The boy died this week because there is no care for people bleeding out in Virgin Gorda. He was responding to CPR, but no way to give him more blood and vent him at the new hospital.
Take that money and save a few lives. Then ship these illegal immigrants home on an airplane!
