Advanced polling today: Things to know

A sample ballot paper.

As the territory hosts advanced polling today, Thursday, February 21, below are things to know about today’s election and voting.

Firstly, voters eligible to participate in advanced polling include police officers, inmates, election officials, the elderly, illiterate and/or physically incapacitated persons, and persons travelling in advance of the date of the February 25 general election.

Notably, with the exception of the elderly (persons 70 years and older) as well as persons who are incapacitated by physical disability or illiteracy, voters participating in advanced polling would have had to fill out what is known as a Form No. 30 application. This application then would have had to be submitted to the Office of the Supervisor of Elections by February 14.

The ballot paper, how to vote

Each voter will be given a single ballot paper that will contain the names of the 16 Territorial At-Large candidates as well as the candidates in the district they are registered.

Each voter is able to vote for ONE district candidate and FOUR At-Large candidates. This means each voter is entitled to vote for no more than five candidates.

A ballot is still valid if a person under-votes (votes for fewer than five persons). However, the office of the Supervisor of Elections said a ballot becomes invalid when a person over-votes (votes for more than five persons).

While the elections office encourages voters to shade inside the oval beside the names of the candidates they wish to vote for, persons are also permitted to vote by marking an ‘X’ inside the said oval. Instructions in the form of words and illustrations will be on each ballot paper.

In the meantime, advancing polling began at 6 o’clock in the morning and closes at 2 pm.

IS THIS REAL YOU HAVE TO GO FROM ONE POLLING STATION TO THE OTHER WHO IS GOING TO THAT THEY RUSH THIS THING. EVERY THING TAKES TIME THIS SHOULD HAVE LEFT FOR THE NEXT ELECTION THEY LOOK LIKE A FOOL DOING THIS NONSENSE. I AM GOING TO VOTE IN MY DISTRICT AND CALL THAT GEORGE.

You misunderstand. All voting is on one ballot paper at your district polling station. No need to go more than one place. Its easy if you haved id card.
