Agriculture Minister hosting meetings with farmers and fishers

Agriculture & Fisheries Minister Dr Karl Dawson has invited the territory’s fisherfolk to a general meeting next Monday, September 4.

A media release from the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries said the purpose of the meeting is to “share information, pool ideas, and discuss the future of fishing in the Virgin Islands”.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 5 pm inside lecture room number-two of the L. Adorothy Turnbull building at Elmore Stoutt High School in Lower Estate.

This meeting with fishers follows a similar meeting with local farmers earlier this week when farmers got the opportunity to voice their concerns about things affecting their livelihood and how to enhance farming as a whole in the territory.

One of the major ongoing problems affecting these agriculture workers is the absence of a steady availability of water for their farms.

“We have plans that are underway that will address those issues concerning water,” Dr Dawson said while speaking on ZBVI Radio recently. He did not give a timeline on when farmers, particularly at Paraquita Bay, can expect a regular flow of water.

In the meantime, the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries is also planning a second round of meetings for farmers living in the sisters islands.

It said dates and venues for that meeting will be announced shortly.

  3. Thanks says:

for the meeting updates BUT actual RESULTS are much more newsworthy. The desired result is much lower consumer prices for all seafood and farm produce in the BVI; like half the price of ALL imported seafood and produce!

  4. Meeting with farmers? says:

Where was this advertised? To my understanding you had a meeting with one or two hand picked farmers who in no way represented the majority.

What happened to the chicken farm near Josiah’s Bay? I thought their stuff was very reasonably priced.

  6. Don’t hold your breath says:

The man can speak very well but putting words into action is a complete different story. For years farming has been on the decline and just like his predecessors nothing will be done to advance it. A lot of taxpayers money will be spent in the process but at the end of the day there will nothing substantial to show for it. As a matter of fact this man got some half dead banana plants round his house if he can’t nurture them then tell me how he going manage large scale farming. Wrong man for agriculture.
