Agriculture proposed to close gap between Anegada, wider territory

Fraser

Residents are being told they can expect a reduced food importation bill as well as greater inclusion of Anegada with the rest of the territory under a Progressives United government.

Party leader Julian Fraser plans to accomplish this by revamping the local agricultural sector.

“We will introduce greenhouse technology for the production of salad fruits and vegetables on the scale that is adequate to eliminate importation. This will save the BVI millions on imports,” Fraser said.

He explained that the proposed operation would be placed on Anegada primarily to capitalise on the transportation it will create between the main island of Tortola and the sister islands while, at the same time, significantly improving commerce and creating jobs.

“If you can imagine the same barge that brings down fruits and vegetables will be taking back badly-needed building materials at a far more economical rate than the current prohibitive rate that obtains,” he said.

“The goal is to eliminate the cost of living gap between Tortola and Anegada, Fraser added.

Plans to revitalise the agricultural sector has been one of the main areas of focus for all political parties on the campaign trail in the lead up to the 2019 General Elections.

Make sure your production is solid before you start imposing import restrictions. Scarcity will cause prices to rise, and we will have a local supply that is to expensive.
