The was much fanfare at the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island today for the arrival of the inaugural American Airlines flight from Miami to the BVI on Thursday, June 1.

There was a large gathering of residents and vendors present to witness the arrival and to greet the passengers — a lot of whom were visitors — on board the flight.

Present at the decorated airport were stilt walkers, a band, students, police presence, a motorcade on the airport runway, representatives of the BVI Tourist Board, other locals in BVI cultural wear, and a showcase of authentic local cuisine and other items.

Initially, American Airlines was supposed to do one flight to the BVI on June 1 but due to a high demand, two inaugural flights were scheduled for that day. There will also be two flights on June 3, 9, 16 and 30, after the airline had previously committed to single flights on those days.

In the meantime, BVI News photographer Andre ‘Shadow’ Dawson was there to capture Thursday’s historic air travel event:

    Who departed on it?

What will they think of next? Sewer system? Reliable water and electricity? Semi decent roads? Nah, the tourists don’t need any of that, just direct flights to natures dirty secrets.

Does the airport have any current jobs available?

At $1400 to $2300 plus going for a round trip ticket from MIA to beef island vs on American eagle and others at $400 -$1,000 from MIA to st thomas.

I’ll wait to see how long this will last and if ultimately American eagle pulls out from here yet again.

Not so much intelligence being shown by you. Because demand is so strong they can charge very high prices. An airlines delight, bet they would like this on every route. Flights full with high priced tickets , why would they pull out ?

Not everyone wants to take the ferry. Looking at August flights it’s currently cheaper to take this direct flight than to fly via San Juan. Those who can afford will take the option.
