All we get mostly is criticism

Labour Minister Vincent Wheatley.

Labour Minister Vincent Wheatley has appealed for continued prayers and encouragement from supporters of the governing Virgin Islands party (VIP), citing the emotional challenges that have to be faced in public life.

“A lot of us in the public life, all we get most of the times is criticism — ‘You ain’t know what you’re doing’, ‘you’re guessing’, ‘oh, you [have] no plan’, ‘no this’. These things are emotionally challenging to us,” Wheatley said at a Seventh District community meeting held this week.

Minister Wheatley thanked persons for sending WhatsApp and other messages with encouraging words, noting that they were very helpful.

“It might not seem like much to you, but when you are in the kitchen in the heat, a little glass of ice water goes a long way,” the Ninth District Representative added.

Drawing a biblical parallel to the Israelites’ 40-year journey after leaving Egypt, Minister Wheatley said the BVI is going through a little desert of its own now.

“We’re going to get to the promised land, that I promise you,” he said.

The minister said when his party first entered office there were damaged homes and buildings around BVI and its first task was to stabilise persons’ lives.

He said the Commission of Inquiry (COI) then emerged as a further distraction, but his government continues to make the people of the territory its main focus.

He dismissed potential naysayers who would say that the government’s actions are only because of the upcoming elections which are constitutionally due sometime early next year.

“They say only them who in the kitchen know about the heat. It’s a lot of heat in this kitchen, but them on the outside would say, oh no man, it’s normal times. These are not normal times,” Wheatley argued. “We haven’t seen a pandemic in over one hundred years.”

The problem is, if you do NOTHING or do your job poorly, then you are of course held to those criticisms. They are truth.

If you keep off people facebook page and stay out the blogs, you will have ample time to do the people work. But when you and your team decide to read and respond to every comment, then take what you get.

This is the most petty and inept government ever. Besides, what you know? You never s**er.

    When is election?

You get criticism because your department is a “Work Permit Issuing Department” and the work permit holders think they are entitled. That is not what a Labour Department should be about, but sadly that is what the BVI’s has turned into.

I am a work permit holder and I know many like me who do not feel entitled to a work permit. You’re either genuinely viewing this all wrong or intentionally doing so because you’re stuck in that “barrrn hyaah” mentality.

If you are genuinely ignorant, do forgive me. But stop speaking rubbish!!!

So they want praise for their incompetence? ROFLMAO Cannot wait for the next election.

What a cry baby . Never seen a politician complaining about constructive criticism. He had a whole year of lockdown to get his ducks in a row.

  12. Hmmm says:

I’m no racist, but maybe if you guys stop issuing work permits for the white expats you might get somewhere. Even when they hire locals, they don’t get paid the same wages as a white for same position. Research it and see.

for a first time minister I can see where your psychological emotions are pulling you down. I would suggest praying and reading would help. Taking the criticism enable you to grow as a leader, whining about it tells the audience that you are still in the level of turning off your emotions and picking up self confidence, that give assurance wherefore of praying and reading.

If you intent to win the next election move move to self assurance , people will see your confidence, though it might be late in the game, they will see your growth.Do not beat you self up.

  20. Wosname says:

It all comes down to the Hon Wheatleys policy. His policy it to go back 40 years and make the bvi a country for Virgin Islanders. That thinking has never worked.
So the coffers are empty and not his fault but all he does is make the situation worse with his racist policy. He has NO business sence! Nada!
If he went back to basics with EDUCATION in all forms such as the three Rs and tech training for those that want to learn.
We had a Culinary colledge program but we struggle to get decent high end staff.
Then there is hospitality which should be basic need for a job in our tourist service but its the Worst! In the Caribbean here. Yes there are exceptions.
Hon Wheatley does not know what we need. They all need to get out of the stupid plack suits and rill up their sleaves or buy Caribbean attire which is a start.

    A couple of things.

What does the Israelites leaving Egypt to go to Caanan have to do with what VIP unable to do its job? The only promise the people will get is when the bunch of misfits under a one man wrecking crew be gone from the leaderahip of the country.

In 3 years all you all have done is rape the treasury through stimulus without any real benefit to the country.

Now after 3 years you want to build the school. Build a ferry terminal in westend that you got not input frol the people on and leave the one in the capital of the country to look like rubbish. The incenerator is down and you claim its the contractor but if you dont pay how do you expect. The plant has always had a problem yet you all did nothing. You paid for a bill which the judiciary said was willocks bill to pay. You cant get the roads fixed and the country looks like a dump. Labouris a mess from the time you touch it. It wasnt broken but you wanted something different then and couldnt get it to operate as it should. If it aint broke dont fix it. I could go on and on but you get the point. Thats why the criticism!!! Country worse than how you got it. That’s my 2 cents.

You had your chance and you blew it, do not come at my door nor call me when you are out begging votes! enjoy your pains ion and keep out of politics, it’s to hot for you!

  25. Me says:

This idiot wants praise for doing a s**tty job ?? What a moron !!!

  26. Dear Minister Wheatley , says:

In that respect, let’s talk labor relations, shall we?

My family has been here for a while. Like many others devoted to the BVI in so many ways. Because of your decisions and the ripple effect, we have been stuck in this pit. I wake up everyday and while I find something to prepare for my young children who by the way attend your schools, I thank God. He is with us in that pit you have placed us in.

I imagine the other families who go through such difficulties. There are many Sir and the struggle is real. But of course, you do not care, do you?

I often wonder how you sleep at nights and now you’re making reference to biblical principles? Is my God a joke to you?

If the negative reactions from a man’s actions are not speaking to his conscience, then something is terribly wrong.

Here’s a biblical word for you! God wants you to treat ALL people fairly with love and kindness! You can do your job and do it with an empathetic, God serving heart! God sees us on earth and see one people. His people. He doesn’t see Trinidadians, or Jamaicans or BVIslanders or St. Lucians. He sees one people! So if you want to talk Bible, make sure you represent the book in it’s entirety. Not snippets please.

    Think about that sir!
