Anegada to become first island in BVI with largescale renewable energy

Plans are being put in place to make Anegada the first island in the British Virgin Islands with large-scale renewable energy.

This is according to the General Manager of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Leroy Abraham who told BVI News the initiative is expected to get started in the near future.

“We are trying to create a microgrid on Anegada so Anegada could potentially be one of the first islands with large scale renewable energy on it. We are about to release a request for proposal next week (this week) internationally for a microgrid. [This microgrid will] include solar PV (Photovoltaic) and battery storage for Anegada,” Abraham stated.

He also said the microgrid will assist with reducing the number of resources needed to run the energy plant on Anegada, which is the only island in the BVI that generates its own electricity.

“The solar PV storage facility will essentially be a compliment to the traditional diesel fuel which generates energy production on the island and essentially makes things much more reliable and efficient on the island,” the BVIEC boss stated.

“Because it’s not connected to the grid, this is the sole means of energy production on the island and it also is very difficult in terms of the whole logistics, in terms of getting fuel here for energy production without them being connected to the parent grid,” Abraham added.

He further said that residents of Anegada can look forward to seeing the other initiatives being undertaken on the sister island.

An excellent pilot project and one which will hopefully be successful and repeated on all other islands ~ eventually.

How is it renewable or clean when batteries are involved? We are using ‘clean’ batteries? jokes.

They will charge the batteries with renewable energy as the energy generated needs to be stored somewhere until it is used.

They are not going to ship charged batteries to Anegada to supply them.

      It’s not that difficult.

      STRUPE COMMENT

The entire point of renewable is to reduce to as close to zero the waste involved in creating energy. Energy storage has mede incredible technology advances in the past year alone. Of course, you’re too busy making STRUPE COMMENTS THAT HURT THE BVI to read anything positive, it would get in the way of your being negative and pitiful and we can tell you take that part of your life seriously. Will this reduce electric cost for the residents?

It would depend upon legislation bit around the world solar typically reduces the costs significantly unless your consumption is high. I know several friends in Caribbean/Latin America that installed a $5000 solar system and haven’t paid a power bill in years, even in rainy season
