Another timeline promised for reopening West End dock

The West End ferry dock was destroyed by the hurricane.

Residents and visitors will have to wait another month or two before government erects the long-promised temporary structure at the West End Ferry Dock.

The Ministry of Communications and Works has been promising to erect a temporary structure at the dock since December.

The dock has not been officially reopened since being destroyed during the hurricanes.

“We did order a structure that would form a temporary housing. However, it has not arrived as yet. If I can recall correctly, it should have left on the 19th of February, so it should be close to the BVI by now,” said Permanent Secretary in the aforementioned ministry, Anthony McMaster.

He said the ministry is hoping to have the terminal reopened by late-April or by May.

Three months ago, Works Minister Mark Vanterpool said the temporary structure is a 4,000 square-foot modular building similar to the one installed at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (Primary Division) on Virgin Gorda.

He said it takes roughly three days to assemble.

In the meantime, government announced that it will spend some $4.2 million to build a more permanent structure at the West End dock.

Construction will be funded through the $65 million government has borrowed from the Caribbean Development Bank for recovery.

I just hope 20 years from now we are not looking at this temporary structure…..maybe I am wrong but why not wait and build a permanent structure. Space out arival and depature in Town to be more efficient.

Why is it that the NDP “No Direction Party” can’t deliver anything properly? …this is only a temporary structure for goodness sake! How come the PS doesn’t know where it is? Is it coming from China by boat! It’s 6 months since the ferry terminal was destroyed – you could have rebuilt it with traditional materials in that time!!! No doubt this temporary structure will cost a fortune,,,although I doubt whether the PS knows how much the scheme cost is or where the money is coming from – just like Road Towns ferry fiasco….

The structure that was there before Irma was also said to be temporary. After time it turned out to be permanent. Irma reminded them it was supposed to be temporary. Now it’s time to get a permanent structure in place; not temporary again.
