Governor Augustus Jaspert has appointed attorney Anthea Smith as the newest member of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission.

The Governor made the appointed upon consultation with Opposition Leader, Andrew Fahie.

The Commission has the power to exercise disciplinary control for public service offices for which persons are required to possess legal qualifications. The Commission can also appoint and remove persons from these public offices.

Smith took her official oaths to join the Commission on April 9.

A media release from government said Smith is a managing partner at a local firm called Sabals Law.

She obtained her law degree from the University of Central England in June 2000 and completed the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law in the said British capital.

She was called to the Bar in England and Wales in July 2001 and the Bar in the British Virgin Islands in September 2001, the release said.

Hopefully the Government (and Leader of the Opposition) can now also proceed to fill the appointments to the lawyer’s Disciplinary Tribunal. For years the Tribunal has been non-functioning because everyone is still waiting for the relevant appointments to be made.
