Ayo don’t forget our netballers!

In a territory where track, basketball, and football have traditionally dominated the sporting spotlight, BVI netballers are quietly but steadily carving out their own space — and now they are calling for the community’s support as they prepare to represent the BVI internationally.

Since being accredited by the BVI Olympic Committee in 2022, Netball BVI has revived the sport across the territory, running leagues, hosting tournaments, and climbing the international rankings — now sitting at 42nd in the world. In just two years, the women’s squad has earned bronze and silver medals at the Battle of the Saints and took home gold at the Tropical Tri-Series Tournament earlier this year.

But their biggest challenge now isn’t on the court — it’s finding the funds to compete on the world stage yet again. The team is appealing for financial support for their trip to the Battle of the Isles International Netball Championship from October 20–26 in St. Maarten. It’s a key tournament that will allow them to earn valuable ranking points against teams from Canada, Bermuda, and Guadeloupe.

“We want to ensure our athletes can focus on performance rather than financial strain,”  Technical Director Mandi Atack said. “The financial support is huge to us, but more than that, for the ladies, knowing they have the backing of the people of the Virgin Islands would be a huge boost.”

The team is asking the public to contribute between $300 and $2,000 to help cover travel, accommodation, training, and equipment costs. Contributions can be arranged by contacting [email protected].

While they await support, Netball BVI said the sport is more than competition; they see it as a platform for empowering women and girls, building confidence, leadership, and a sense of community.

“Netball BVI is more than just a team; it is a family, a community, and a platform for empowering women through sport,” said Atack. “Every player who steps onto the court represents not only herself but the pride, resilience, and spirit of the Virgin Islands.”

Great article. Thank you bvinews bringing this subject to light.
I have been part of the BVI netball program for over a year and am so proud to be a member of the team.
These lovely ladies work so hard and try to fit in their team work their fitness and practice plus working full time and with family commitments. It’s always a struggle to get funding for these overseas events but it helps put our beautiful Islands in the spotlight. These events are also expensive but with help from corporations and family and friends they make it happen. And hopefully some backing from our government. We’re proud to fly our flag.

My wife has been a part of the Netball BVI program for nearly 2 years now and it’s the best thing that’s happened to her in the BVI.

It’s a great group of ladies who are all committed to representing these beautiful islands with great pride and passion.

Netball is on the up in the BVI and it would be amazing for the team to climb up the world rankings and become great role models for the young girls in the BVI and provide the impetus to grow the sport.

They need financial support and I will be providing sponsorship to help them out.

Just tell the Premier you going to a “netball party” and problem solved.

Tell the minister for sports that international media will be there and problem solved.
