Ban on night flights to Anegada airport being lifted

Night flights are soon expected to make a return to the Auguste George International Airport on Anegada.

Premier Andrew Fahie made that announcement while delivering a statement in the House of Assembly last Thursday.

He stated: “Night flights are still not allowed into the Auguste George International Airport in Anegada. But we expect to lift this restriction in the very near future, further opening up the potential for economic opportunities on the sister island.”

“The roadmap for resumption of these flights has been developed and the required improvements have been identified or procured but are not yet in place,” he added.

Premier Fahie listed a checklist of items which are needed at the airport to ensure the ban is lifted. This list includes a backup generator, additional runway lights, an airport beacon; and staff training in night operations.

He said that due to the delay of the arrival of the runway lights which are being imported from Belgium, the airport will not be fully completed until April this year.

Many opportunities to be made available

This initiative according, to Premier Fahie, is expected to significantly increase airlift opportunities to Anegada along with many other economic possibilities.

“[It will] increase connectivity to the sister island, facilitating increased volume of visitor arrivals and this will benefit the hotels, earning opportunities for taxi drivers and tour guides, and create additional jobs due to increased demand for services in Anegada,” he stated.

Mr. Premier couple months ago while you were still in your campaign mode you claimed that the airport on the sister islands were a potential risk for illegal activities. Now that night flights would be resumed what have you done to mitigate against those risks? I could bet the answer would be nothing!!!

You obviously is a mischiefmaker because you quote what you want from what was said. The Premier measures obviously will take all you want to highlight and more into account. We congratulte the Premier for this initiative.

You know criminals can land at the airport 24/7 now ! People who participate in illegal activities are risk takers by nature. It sounds to me (I live in Seattle) your government leaders are committed to providing a useful, safe and productive facility. You folks in BVI’s have been through so much. Rebuilding your infrastructure is key to enabling your citizens to make enough money to afford food, clothing and housing. Just my observations as an outsider.

This is welcome especially for those persons who get sick on Anegada and need flying out to Tortola by night. Who feels it knows it.

as stated above this is for medical emergencies but tell you what for lights and extra shifts you can move your new hospital to Anegada, does that seem fair?

Tell your guests to pay for the earlier flights……

  6. On Anegada says:

Kudos Hon Fahie.. many of us have had to wait in pain until day break to get off of Anegada… This will make a big difference.. Next let’s talk about this $500 we have to pay to be flown out for medical emergencies.. (if you don’t have it the plane ain’t coming)?
