Beneficial ownership raised at OT leaders’ summit
Heads of government from various United Kingdom (UK) Overseas Territories (OT) met in Miami in late July to discuss beneficial ownership among a number of other issues.
A recent communique from the BVI government said the meeting was held to, among other things, discuss issues of mutual importance and agree on actions to address shared challenges.
The government said the territories explored opportunities about shared historical and heritage links to foster greater awareness, especially through youth, sports and cultural exchanges.
Other issues that were touched on by the heads of government included improved engagement and information-sharing between Caribbean OTs, representation at international forums, and the United Kingdom’s relationship with its Overseas Territories.
The meeting was chaired by Cayman Islands Premier, Wayne Panton and included several senior officials and civil servants from the respective Overseas Territories.
Other leaders in attendance included Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Charles Misick; Premier of Anguilla, Dr Ellis Webster; Deputy Premier of Bermuda, Walter Roban as well as Cayman Islands Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, Bernie Bush. Premier of Montserrat, Joseph Taylor-Farrell participated in the meeting virtually.
Earlier this year, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley and other Overseas Territories and United Kingdom Ministers participated in the Joint Ministerial Council in London to discuss issues aimed to promote the security and good governance of the territories, sustainable development, economic and social progress and to agree on priorities, develop plans and review implementation.
