Bids: Gov’t selling derelict vehicles to residents

Not any of the vehicles mentioned in the story.

Roughly 50 derelict vehicles scattered across the island of Tortola are being put up for sale.

Government said they are inviting residents to submit sealed bids for a chance to buy the vehicles.

The vehicles are being sold ‘as is’, government noted in a media release on Monday.

The release said successful bidders will receive what is known as an award letter to purchase their vehicle of interest.

“Payments should be made to the Accountant General seven working days after an award letter has been received. The letter must be presented when payment is being made. If the highest bidder fails to honour the agreement, the bid will be cancelled and forfeited, and the opportunity given to the next highest bidder to complete the proposal.”

“The sold vehicle must be removed by the successful bidder within 24 hours of the sale at their own expense. No assistance/transportation will be provided by the Government of the Virgin Islands,” government added.

To join the bidding process, interested persons must submit sealed bids addressed and delivered to the ‘Procurement Coordinator’ in the Ministry of Finance located on the third floor of East Atrium at the Central Administration Complex in Road Town.

The bid should include the registration number, make/model, VIN number and year of the vehicle, and in bold capital letters ‘Quotation for Derelict Vehicle’, the government said.

Persons have until 10am on Friday, June 29 to submit a bid.

Meanwhile, persons are allowed to inspect the vehicles at their respective locations, which are listed HERE

This news article is vague on the facts. This news article concerns only 50 derelict vehicles owned by the BVI government. Additionally the sealed bid offer does not contain any instructions to the successful bidder on the post sale disposition of these vehicles. Assuming successful sales of these derelicts then Tortola will have 50 more derelicts clogging the streets, roads, driveways, laybys and parking lots of Tortola. It would be appropriate for the BVI government to require that all sold derelicts must be stored/parked on private land indoors in a garage or workshop and NOT in public view until repaired, inspected, insured and licensed for 2018 & 2019!

This is a news report. If you need more information, I would refer you to the Procurement Coordinator at the Ministry of Finance.

Time to get rid of this junk and not scatter it across the island where it will sit for years.

So Government is selling garbage so it can be moved from one area to another? I’m hoping in this instance derelict simply means the vehicle has been abandoned but may be in working condition?

  4. Albion says:

I wonder how many bids they will receive. Probably not too many.

  5. hmmm says:

are these vehicles owned by the government or are they forwarding the funds to the registered owner?
