Big shift happening in Alzheimer’s perception

Health Minster Vincent Wheatley

As the Virgin Islands marks World Alzheimer’s Month, Health Minister Vincent Wheatley, has placed a spotlight on the changing global perception that has come to be associated with the disease.

Dementia is a degenerative brain condition that robs a person of their memory, competency, comprehension and behavioural awareness — usually slowly over years — and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

This year’s observation of World Alzheimer’s Month is being championed by Alzheimer’s Disease International to raise awareness of dementia and to help address and eliminate the stigma associated with the disease.

The campaign theme for this year — “Never too early, never too late” — emphasises identifying risk factors, adopting proactive risk reduction measures, and providing ongoing strategies for those diagnosed with dementia to delay and potentially prevent its onset.

Minister Wheatley said doctors and patients are beginning to understand that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can start many years before symptoms start to become apparent. However, he noted that, with the global number of people living with dementia expected to triple by 2050, there is a greater need for a more urgent understanding and response to the risk factors associated with this condition.

The World Health Organisation reports over 55 million global dementia cases, with over 60 percent in low and middle-income nations. In the BVI, some 188 people have officially been diagnosed with dementia, but considering global under-diagnosis trends, the actual number likely exceeds 300.

In light of the absence of a cure for Alzheimer’s and considering international statistics and local data, Wheatley called on the community to embrace this year’s theme to reshape residents’ perception of Alzheimer’s.

He also encouraged residents to engage in events organised by the Virgin Islands Alzheimer’s Association, in partnership with various other local organisations, during World Alzheimer’s Month. These activities, he said, aim to raise awareness about dementia, counteract stigma, and advocate for improved support and care.

  1. Well says:

Investigate the cheap generic medicine that some of these doctors are selling so they can make a big profit off of NHI. Some of these medicine have terrible side effects. Like the healthcare of some of these Doctors its bad.

You sit there like you don’t know the problem. Some of these Doctors who don’t have a conscience are out of control and need strong Regulation.

The BVI Health Services and NHI need a commission of inquiry and a strong Forensic Audit. Not to mention it should be moved under the portfolio of the Governor, not the Deputy Governor but the Governor.

@Well, there is more to this. Based on extensive research into the prevalence of Alzheimer’s, in the last 10 years, I have come to understand that Alzheimer’s is a product of failed medical theory and is a physician caused disease. It came into medical literature in 1979. Alzheimer’s never existed 50 years ago. The cholesterol restricted diet promoted by our physicians since 1979 has led to no less than 25 cholesterol deficiency diseases which include Alzheimer’s. 75% of our brain weight is Cholesterol called Myelin, a fatty stuff. Myelin is 100% cholesterol. We only make 10% of our cholesterol needs, the rest 90% must come from supplement by way of couple of eggs or 72oz. of red meat, chicken meat, rendered animal fats, including along with the 90 essential nutrients. The moment our physicians yielded to pressures from the pharmaceutical industry to introduce statin drugs to lower cholesterol, cases of Alzheimer’s exploded. By the way, Cholesterol does not clog the arteries, rather, Margarine, hydrogenated oil, oxidized oils etc. do. Every oil will oxidize, Coconut oil though is resistant to oxidation, it will oxidize eventually once exposed to air. The real issue with Cholesterol, yet to be discovered by our Allopathic physician is the need to balance Omega 3 and 6 to ratio 1:1 otherwise, there will be elevated triglycerides. The anti-inflammatory properties in Omega 3 are needed for safe consumption of Omega 6 foods. Cholesterol crises are inevitable where Diabetes crises and celiac disease are different hands of the same octopus. I call on our allopathic Physicians to carefully take another closer look into the use of statins as well as the use of antacids for Acid reflux. Acid reflux is never a case of excessive hydrochloric acid. I stand to be corrected.
