Birthday wishes flow as Fahie turns 56 behind bars
Former Premier Andrew Fahie received an outpouring of birthday wishes from residents and supporters last week, as he marked his 56th birthday behind bars in the United States.
At least 114 friends posted directly to Fahie’s Facebook profile for his August 7 birthday, continuing a tradition that has emerged every year since his incarceration. The public displays of affection have persisted despite Fahie’s dramatic fall from power following his April 2022 arrest in Miami. In 2023, BVI News reported that more than 100 people had similarly flooded his Facebook page with birthday wishes while he awaited trial.
This year, the support extended beyond Fahie’s own page.
One birthday tribute posted by a Facebook user generated particularly strong engagement, attracting more than 400 reactions and over 150 comments. The graphic referred to Fahie as “Hon. Andrew A. Fahie” and carried a religious message praying for God’s grace, peace, hope and strength over his life.
Many commenters echoed those sentiments.
“Happy Blessed Birthday Honourable Fahie. May God continue to cover you with his precious blood,” one person wrote.
Another told Fahie to “stay positive and strong in the mind always,” while another wished him “birthday blessings and love.”
“Blessed birthday, Cuz,” another commenter wrote.
The messages highlight the personal support Fahie continues to command in sections of the BVI community, despite being removed from the territory for more than four years.
Fahie was arrested in Miami on April 28, 2022, while serving as Premier. He was convicted in February 2024 on charges related to a conspiracy to facilitate cocaine trafficking through the BVI and money laundering. In August 2024, he was sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison.
His birthdays have since become a recurring reminder of the complicated feelings surrounding his incarceration.
Some residents believe his actions brought unprecedented shame and damaging international attention to the BVI, arguing that someone convicted of such serious offences should not be publicly celebrated. Others maintain that Fahie remains a Virgin Islander, relative, friend and former community leader deserving of compassion. For them, sending birthday wishes or praying for him does not amount to condoning the actions that led to his conviction.

Why is this news? Andrew Fahie has a huge family and was a beloved Teacher, basketball coach, softball coach, Methodist Church member and oganist long before his incarceration. Many were mentored by him for free and again all of this was long before politics. He was Andrew A. Fahie the person long before he was Andrew A. Fahie the politican and Premier. If people decide to send Birthday wishes to a relative or someone they themselves had positive interaction with, despite their subsequent fall from grace due to illegal activity, I am not sure why it is news save to stir up negative sentiments against persons who chose to wish the man a happy birthday. It quite frankly unbecoming of serious journalism and it is condescending to the people who chose to simply wish someone a happy birthday be it their relative or whatever. It look like you half crack or something. Andrew is in jail for drugs. Do you understand this? Myron got accused wrongly for a wall that the court said that there is no evidence of any criminal activity. Where is the comparison?
The part that amazes me isn’t just the crimes themselves—it’s what we choose to celebrate afterwards.
This is a man who, according to the U.S. case, was accused of agreeing to use the BVI’s ports to facilitate cocaine trafficking in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Whether people support him personally or believe he has good qualities is one thing. But if the allegations are true, he was willing to put the reputation and future of this Territory at risk for personal gain.
Yet every year we celebrate him as though none of that matters.
Then we turn around and ask why so many young people are attracted to crime, fast money and corruption.
Young people watch what adults reward. If they see people accused or convicted of serious crimes still being treated like heroes, they receive a message: success matters more than integrity, and criminal conduct doesn’t necessarily cost you respect.
The same applies across our society. We complain about gun crime, drugs, corruption and violence, yet too often we protect, glorify or make excuses for the very people involved. We criticize police for every failure, but remain silent when criminals are protected by communities or when witnesses refuse to cooperate.
We ask why corruption keeps surfacing in public institutions. We ask why young men are drawn to gangs, drugs and illegal firearms. We ask why violence continues to rise.
Perhaps we should also ask what kind of culture we’ve created.
A culture where “badman” lifestyles are admired. A culture where fast money is envied. A culture where music and social media often glorify guns, drugs and intimidation. A culture where too many people excuse wrongdoing because the offender is popular, politically connected or someone they like.
None of this means people cannot be forgiven. Forgiveness is important.
But forgiveness should never mean pretending nothing happened or celebrating conduct that harmed the Territory.
If we truly want fewer young people choosing crime, then we need to stop sending mixed messages. We cannot tell our children that honesty, hard work and respect for the law matter while publicly celebrating those who achieve success through corruption or criminality.
The values we celebrate today become the values our children imitate tomorrow.
This tells me everything that’s wrong with this territory. We’re sending birthday wishes to a convicted criminal who embarrassed us on an international leve and who used his position in politics to advance his own interests through corruption and greed.
We celebrate criminality and corruption, then wonder why crime continues to run through this place. The standards we tolerate are the standards we normalize.
