Boat burning may have been an inside job — Davies

Attorney-at-law Daniel Fligelstone-Davies.

Local attorney Daniel Fligelstone Davies said it is a dangerous assumption to conclude that the burning of a boat within the compound of the Road Town Police Station (RTPS) was something done by criminal elements outside of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Police seized two vessels following an operation conducted in BVI waters last week where they made several arrests and confiscated a large quantity of controlled drugs as well as a firearm from one of the vessels.

However, one of the boats seized was later stolen from the police marine base while the other was burned in an early-morning arson at the RTPS which the police later blamed on criminal elements who it said acted in a calculated effort to destroy evidence.

But Davies disputed the Force’s position while appearing on the Hot Seat radio programme last evening. He argued that incidents of criminal activity in the past have fingered police officers, including a high-profile matter that has been engaging the attention of the courts for the last few years.

“People assume it’s an outside job,” Davies said. “I think that’s a dangerous assumption given their record. Remember the policemen that were caught with the cocaine at East End with the trailer?”

In the meantime, commentators on another radio programme have questioned the state of the territory’s security given the aftermath of the recent police operation and the audacity of criminal elements who were able to steal a boat from the police and burn another on the Force’s property.

“So it’s ironic that these things are happening and there seems to be crime all around,” Elvin Grant said on the Talking Points show. “Because it does beg a few questions. How is that able to happen, right under their noses?”

Grant said while there has been much talk and grumbling under the surface, there is now a need for some degree of accountability from persons in law enforcement.

So far, the RVIPF has offered no explanation on the glaring lapse that allowed the two incidents to happen. However, it has condemned the acts and said additional lines of inquiry are being pursued.

The police have also called for the continued support of the public in helping to bring criminal elements to justice. “The support of law-abiding members of the community is reassuring and sustains an unwavering determination to continue efforts to keep serving and protecting the Virgin Islands,” the RVIPF said.

There are not many countries on Earth where a police officer can walk into the police commissioners office and attempt an assassination. But, it happened on this little island not too long ago, and now we potentially have officers destroying evidence. I mean, when we consider that not just one chief minister has been embroiled in drug a scandal, it should not come as a surprise. But one thing is certain: we need a total shake-up of the RVIPF and local government.

It’s such a pity that someone who is presumably intelligent can show this level of ignorance. On what does he base this assumption that it’s an inside job? Just because of the fact that policemen were caught with cocaine at East End?

I know of a couple of cases where lawyers were charged with and found guilty of murder. Should I conclude that every lawyer, including him, is a murderer and not to be trusted?

Stop trying to have the public mistrust the police, you are an officer of the law and should know better.

Just what we need, conspiracy theories. Mr Davies, why are you trying to discredit the police by throwing wild stories around that you can’t prove? Anyway, the boat burning isn’t the most important thing here. This is what we know, the boat was involved in a drug haul, the evidence was seized and the boat examined. The occupants of the boat have been identified and arrested.

We been saying this!! Those crooked a**, can’t be trusted cops burn that boat themselves. Up to now the public can’t get knowledge of the amount of drugs that was found and when we do it will be significantly lower that what was actually confiscated as always. Set of Thief and Crooks they have working in that department and the Governor praising their ass for a good job just because the head of that crooked department is also white!!!

  21. Common Sense says:

He is using common sense. Thst is not judging. Look
at the chain of events and where it happened
Police made a grand parade of taking the boats to their respective areas
Then right in the station boat was burned ..: That premise should be the most guarded area …It is tge base from which the enforcement people work, sleep, have records etc
Private citizens can survey their property what happened to this one single. Oremise in the heart of the town where people should feel safe and decure
A boat is not a teapot . It has to be hauled or start up
To take away from the premises on the marine base

Police on the beat at that time, must be throughly investigated. Too much going on in the country and we keep looking the other way

Be careful cause if something is to happen to you, it’s the same police you’ll have to call. I’m not saying they’re all perfect, but unless there’s proof that an actual police officer helped with the burning of the boat, we shouldn’t speculate.

If you all know who did it, just say, instead of being here just blobbing, and in the meantime say who own the boat, who was on it when it rammed the police?

  30. Just saying says:

I believe that the drugs was Davies own??? hahahahahahah

  31. sense says:

The fire would have been a lot worst and cause more damage had it not been for the officers on duty, who helped contain it until the fire department came from another fire (suspicious that this happened when fire dept was responding to something).

Police are overworked, underpaid and not appreciated by much of the general public, yet they do a job that many wont.

Why assume the station was not guarded? How else would they have been able to see it early? All they had to do was patrol another area on the compound for 2 mins for the criminal to throw something over the fence. The police station is not a boat yard and the marine unit is under construction (not a boat yard either).

Suppose officers were so distracted by securing the boat that something worse had happened. They got what they needed from the boat. Its the drugs that needed the security.

Shame on all of you who so one-sided that the criminals will continue. Even when they are caught in the act yall still finding ways to spin this on police. Make sure its your lil criminal friends you call when something is happening to you then.

    Hello…

It can be also the lawyer with his own assumption. The vessels were seized by Police with contraband correct. Who would better benefit from destroying the vessels. The suspects themselves and not all police officers are involved in corruption and not ALL Lawyers are involved either.

People can assume anything and put doubt in our minds until you have facts then keep your mouth shut.

  42. Not from BVI says:

No proof keep you mouth shut.

Its best to keep our mouths shut closed until you know all the facts in any case.

A lawyer can make all the assumptions he wants as that’s what he’s paid to do to cast doubt.

  45. Amazing police says:

Wow it’s amazing how the police instead of pulling up their weaknesses and demand better for our community… they come on here defending team police for doing a sloppy job.

Helllooo arresting dirty cops is your job! You want cookies too? Praise for doing your job? I want praise for doing my job too.

Let’s say I’m a doctor.. if you criticize my sloppy work that could have gotten people injured. A fire in road town is serious embers can fly everywhere.

Can I expect the other doctors to come out blogging in my defense?

The police is the biggest & only legalized gang.300+ strong & filled with foreigners. Facts.

If multiple members over a period of years have factually been found to be dirty…. and there is no COI into the police then we have all right to question the whole organization.

The best their vetting process is void & smelly to put it lightly.
