Information reaching BVI News is that former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC), Dr Robert Mathavious, has died.
Dr Mathavious reportedly passed away on Sunday morning, September 14. The circumstances surrounding his passing are not yet clear.
Widely regarded as a visionary for the territory’s financial services industry, Dr Mathavious was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2020. From the start of his career, he was dedicated to developing and enhancing the Virgin Islands’ reputation as a leading jurisdiction for legitimate cross-border financial services.
He also gave generously of his time in the voluntary sector, supporting more than 20 philanthropic groups, including initiatives for the elderly and the establishment of the Youth Boys Brigade.
Following the devastating hurricanes of 2017, Dr Mathavious played a pivotal role in uniting key stakeholders to plan recovery efforts and safeguard critical industries. He was instrumental in generating much-needed revenue for the territory and in the establishment of the Recovery and Development Agency.

A really impressive public servant. He made a huge contribution to the BVI. RIP.
Mr. Mathavious spent his entire adult life toiling for this/his country. A harder working individual is difficult to find. He worked Sunday to Sunday and worked so well for us to build Financial Services in the Virgin Islands to a level many thought impossible. We are grateful. We loved him dearly. We will miss him.
He has left a legacy for us to build on and to emulate. We must practice the excellence laid down for us to follow.
May he’s soul rest in peace
A gentle giant. His selfless service to his country will always be remembered. Rest in peace Sir and may his wife and he entire family be comforted by Almighty God as they mourn.
Words cannot described the impact of Dr M’s passing. He was a beacon of light for the BVI. May you rest in peace, sir. To all those that knew you, served under you, and worked with you; thanks. We will do our best to carry the torch, knowing we will never fill your shoes. But may we try together to develop the BVI you worked so hard for. To your family, we are truly sorry for your loss. We love you Robby.

Thank you Sir!
Curious as to his age
or is this another BVI secret.
The same as your mother
Apart from all that he did to develop the financial services industry of the BVI, he was passionate in his love for the territory. I remember being on the same AA plane as him, flying from SJU to EIS. Most of the other passengers were tourists and as they cranes their necks to see the BVI approaching, asking which island was which, Dr. Mathavious stood up and gave a running commentary on all that we were seeing on each side of the plane. Little did the tourists know of Dr. Mathavious’s huge importance to the economic development of the territory, but as a tourist ambassador, he was amazing!
“Through the mudd” That’s between you and I Doc. Condolences to your entire family from my family. Rest in peace my life long friend. Till we meet again.
