Budget Address postponed for tsunami exercise

Parliamentarians in the recently-refurbished House of Assembly building in Road Town on Thursday, March 1.

The long-awaited Budget Address from Premier Dr D Orlando Smith has been postponed.

A media release from the House of Assembly’s public relations department said the budget address, which was scheduled for today, is being put off until Monday, March 19.

“This is to allow for the territory’s participation in the annual Earthquake and Tsunami CARIBE WAVE Exercise,” the release said.

However, today’s sitting of House of Assembly will still convene, the release added.

Tsunami exercise scheduled months ago

The Tsunami CARIBE WAVE Exercise is an annual undertaking organized by the Intergovernmental Coordination Group.

It provides an opportunity for its member states, including the BVI, to test their plans, improve their Tsunami Warning System effectiveness, and promote tsunami awareness.

This year’s exercise was scheduled considerably long in advance of the now-postponed Budget Address.

Government had announced the today’s tsunami exercise in early January.

The last-minute postponement of the Budget Address comes amid reports that things are severely amiss internally with the National Democratic Party government.

It is already late. I can wait another four days.

But if anyone in the House stands up and tries to block the funds from the UK I will be angry. They will be held accountable at the next election for trying to choke off the Territory’s hurricane recovery for their own political gain.
