Burden lifted! Former manager at telecoms company freed of theft charge after 2 years

Not the generator mentioned in the story.

Former Sales Manager at local telecommunications company Digicel, Matthew Daly, has been exonerated from a theft charge at the High Court after the Crown filed a motion of discontinuance in the matter on Tuesday.

The Hodges Creek resident was accused of stealing three generators immediately following Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and was subsequently charged on February 22, 2018.

Daly’s version of the events is that the ‘old’ generators were not functioning for several years when a few men asked if they could have them fixed following the hurricanes.

Daly claimed he was charged for theft even though the items had been returned.

“It was something that could have been solved indoors. I was with the company from the get-go, and I was very instrumental in building the company,” he said, adding that he believes the matter was as a result of a personal vendetta against him.

When the charge was put to him, Daly had entered a not guilty plea and the matter was sent to the High Court for continuation.

“To be honest with you, I feel like a burden lifted off my shoulders, especially when you were not guilty of what you were charged of. I have been out of work for over two years and months now. It was really damaging,” he told BVI News after volunteering himself for interview.

When asked how he survived without employment during that time, he replied: “By the grace of God.”

Daly was represented by defence attorney Reynela Rawlins, who also confirmed that his charges were dismissed because the Crown was unable to locate witnesses.
