Premier Andrew Fahie said business owners are showing interest in hiring locals as part of the government’s 1,000 jobs in 1,000 days initiative.

Fahie said the initiative will be launched next Tuesday, May 14.

“We already have businesses who have signed on and ready to hire Belongers in those positions with training, and we will achieve that goal,” the Premier said during a press conference to roll out another initiative to grant regularised status to select expatriate residents.

He continued: “We are doing plenty more like making sure that people get their rightful place in this country. We are launching programmes every Tuesday.

One of the other initiatives to be launched this month is a marine programme, the Premier said.

In keeping with election promise

During the lead-up to the 2019 General Election in February, Fahie’s Virgin Islands Party promised to create significant employment opportunities for residents.

At the time, Fahie said his government was optimistic that they would exceed that goal with their ‘bold’ policies and their ‘encouragement of small business development’.

It was during that time he first proposed the 1,000 jobs in a 1,000 idea. Fahie further said he expects the majority of the employment opportunities would be channelled through tourism as well as through the construction of a major multimillion project to repair the territory’s sewerage systems.

He also said a VIP administration would endeavour to attract a new five-star property to the territory on their quest towards employment creation.

Signed up to what ? All that is happening is broad statements but no substance . Local companies will only employ what they need the gov has not done anything to create more need. What about doing something bold why not start installing a solar panel field , new industry , new jobs and green energy .start a program at the university of solar energy study to create the knowledge now that would be real job and wealth creation , next start a recycling plant again new jobs and have study on recycling it’s all a win win
