Businessman fined $2K for marijuana possession

A Fat Hogs Bay businessman was fined $2,000 after he was caught with 6.7 grams of cannabis last year.

Twenty-six-year-old Sequonne Moulon was fined after pleading guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Shawn Innocent on Friday.

He has six months to pay the $2,000 sum or, in default, will spend six months at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut.

What happened

The court heard that about 1:15 am on June 16 last year, police stopped and searched Moulon after noting that he was driving without a seatbelt.

During the search, law enforcers found a transparent bag containing green vegetable matter.

When asked about the contents of the bag, Moulon told the cops: “That there is a little weed.”

“You are going to lock me up for that?” Moulan reportedly asked while being arrested.

He was subsequently brought to the Road Town Police Station where he was charged.

His early guilty plea, the fact that he has no previous convictions were factors the court considered before sentencing the offender.

How ridiculous in this day and age that possession less than a quarter ounce for personal consumption should be treated so harshly. Around the world marijuana is being legalized with great financial rewards to the state and the opportunity to eliminate the criminal element. When taking this retrograde action the state is required to spend its resources to catch and prosecute our own people while doing little, but at great expense, to stop the illegal trade. Time to look at monetarizing “weed” with the idea of legal export and attracting tourism to enrich the state and pay some of those social expenses with the proceeds.

Agreed with you. Both education and common sense should work hand and hand together. I hope we can figure out something and fast. Tons of people are having criminal records for this issue only and it’s damaging or could damage their future plans in life.

Enforcement of the law is under the descretion of the officer. The officer coulda save the tax payers money by taking the weed and dumping it rhen sending the boy home. But we dont have many forward thinkers in this country. In other places even if marinuana is legal…. small amounts are juat stepped on or thrown out with a warning because its not worth the paperwork, time and energy all while ruining someone record.
