BVI experiences widespread power outage Tuesday morning

Sections of the BVI — particularly areas on the BVI Electricity Corporation’s (BVIEC) main grid on Tortola — are experiencing a power outage.

Some residents have reported losing power in their communities around 7 o’clock Tuesday morning, July 20.

In a brief statement on Facebook, the BVIEC described the situation as an “island-wide power outage”.

The Corporation did not disclose the cause of the outage but said its team was “working expeditiously to restore electricity”.

Power had returned to some affected areas on Tortola up to publication time.

The Pockwood Pond-based Wilfred Smith Power Station is the BVI’s main power grid and supplies electricity to roughly a dozen islands in the territory. These include Jost Van Dyke, Frenchman’s Cay, Little Thatch, Beef Island, Great Camanoe, Buck Island, Scrub Island, Marina Cay, Saba Rock, Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

The far-flung sister island of Anegada has an independent power station.

Can’t fix stupid in the Third World. Maybe if the crooks didn’t steal all the money there could be proper power, internet, roads and sewage. This isn’t Uganda or is it!!!

For years, successive Governments have failed to invest in a strong infrastructure to support the future development of the BVI. You can’t build an economy without excellent roads, power, water/sewerage, telecommunications and education. These are vital, but not “sexy” and our “leaders” have dismally failed to plan for the future. There has been no vision since HL Stoutt. We had the money, but instead it disappeared on grand schemes and corruption, neither of which have moved the country forward.
