BVI looks to cement status as premier aviation hub

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BVI Airport Authority (BVIAA), Theodore Burke, said the Authority is making plans to ensure that it secures the territory’s position as a leading tourism hotspot in the region.

Burke’s statement to the press comes in the wake of many abrupt closures to the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport and other airport facilities.

But the Board Chair has declared that the Authority is steadfast in its commitment to propel aviation to new heights. Burke told the media that the BVIAA board’s ultimate goal has been positioning the territory as a beacon of excellence and innovation in the aviation sector.

He further expressed that the board is making significant strides towards that objective.

“The future of aviation is bright and in good hands,” the Chairman said. “Looking forward to the future, we have exciting projects and initiatives in the pipeline that will solidify the Virgin Islands’ position as a premier aviation hub in the Caribbean region.”

Burke, while reflecting on recent incidents at the airport that forced several impromptu closures over the past two months, said issues that have arisen are being tackled head-on and promised to implement what he described as a robust contingency plan.

The board chairman explained that inadequate staffing to cover shifts forced the closure of the airport on two of the most recent occasions.

“Rest assured that these challenges have not been taken lightly,” Burke said. “And our team has tackled them head-on with a resolute commitment to finding lasting solutions. Our team has since put operational contingencies in place and made significant strides in mitigating potential disruptions.”

Burke promised that the board will take steps to further enhance facilities, streamline processes and implement sustainable practices to minimise environmental impact.

    “Cement status, beacon of excellence”?

Bro, you are a long way off from cementing brick, never mind ‘status’! You are the laughingstock of the Caribbean – the only silver lining to this entire fiasco is that you have nowhere to go but ‘up’ from where you currently reside!

The Beef island airport is probably the only airport left that has no screens with departure and arrival information.

It’s the simple things that make this airport a third world experience.

Fix the basics before thinking about calling yourself premier.

You can’t even keep the airport opened but you want to be a Premier Hub with a 100 meter dash runway! How? This whole island need a set of psychiatrists to help some of these people.

  12. Sounds great... says:

Too bad no one believes him. How can we become a hub when it costs more to do business here than most other places. Just to take off and land, then buy gas is a small fortune. I guess these folks think that everybody out here is a dummy.

  13. @Miss Information says:

This is just another set doing what another set did. Like the time they tried to let us think $7M could BUY 2 airplanes. They really could start with the small stuff, the stuff that affects US who are paying the taxes. How about the room where car rental agencies had desks. Things are pushed up on top of things making the space look like a store room. Not a good optic. Or the parking lot kiosk like some other person commented. How about they charge $2.50, take $3 and no changed returned. We are definitely not ready even for today much less getting us to Hub status. We could be a Hub before Puerto Rico? Please people, could someone get them to stop talking to us like we are all brainless nits. It’s downright disrespectful.

  17. Really? says:

The premier hub? That is a laughable idea for so many reason. First, the inside of the terminal looks like a hurricane just hit it. Not several years ago. You can’t keep the airport open for any length of time. The runway length is woefully inadequate. And the whole thing is being managed by corrupt belongers who will use funds earmarked for the airport to pad their own pockets.

How about opening the VG airport to residents who want to land at the VG airport. Right now it is closed to personal aircraft.
